Since the death of George Floyd, our country has been mourning and active in pursuit of the changes needed to improve our criminal justice system. Today I write specifically to address the acts of aggression and instigation committed by our own police department in the city of SLO. The protests in our own city have been remarkably peaceful, and I find it disgusting to witness the behavior of the SLO PD in response to the protests. Peaceful protesters should never be subjected to tear gasses and other non-lethal chemical weapons. While I clearly understand that these measures were likely not directed by you, they most definitely reflect upon you. During my time in San Luis Obispo, I have been a proud resident, and mostly proud of the actions taken by Ms. Harmon and the City Council. This however is not something I will stand by. The activists of SLO do not deserve to have their civil rights of safety to be taken away by a police force that doesn’t represent their interests. I urge you to divert some of the funds from the police department to community development projects. The city we all love is capable of so much positive growth and change to meet the needs of the 21st century, and it would certainly be a shame to lose some of that potential to a police force that is openly willing to tear gas peaceful SLO residents. Elections matter, and I am sure central coast voters will never forget what happened in May/June of 2020. Make our community proud. May safety be with you and the people of San Luis Obispo, James Michael Sieffert 1
