Subject:Support 8 Can't Wait and police accountability
Hello City Council,
I'm writing today to support our City's adoption of the entirety of the 8 Can't Wait Framework (8cantwait.org). The City
and SLO Police Department has already instituted the duty to intervene and the requirement of warning before
shooting.
In addition, we must require our City police force to adopt the banning of chokeholds, requiring of de-escalation, the
exhaustion of all alternatives before shooting, the requirement of comprehensive reporting, and the use of force
continuum limiting the types of force and/or weapons that are used to respond to specific kinds of resistance.
I'm happy to hear that the City has responded and committed budget funds to combat racial injustice, although I'm
having trouble locating that information after first hearing it. Will you please be sure that this kind of information is
shared and accessible.
Our white City of SLO must do more than just adopt measures meant to reform the Police Department. We must explore
how to partner, collaborate and work with other cities more impacted by racial injustice than ours to spread out this
fight.
Please continue to share the steps that the City Council is taking and be 100% transparent to inform our citizens about
why and how the current Police force structure (in our city and all others) MUST be changed and reformed.
The safest communities don't have the most cops; they have the most resources. We have so many resources here in
SLO. How can your department rise to meet the needs of our Country as a whole?
Thank you,
Erika Neel
