RE: Cultural Heritage Committee Review of item #2 - 1144 Chorro Street
Please add me to the list of concerned citizens who oppose the proposed project at
1144 Chorro Street, San Luis Obispo.
A 7 story building is too massive and will make a dramatic change to Downtown SLO.
In addition to towering above the majority of buildings in Downtown it will be one more
bash against the hometown feel our city is known for.
A big shift for the downtown began with Hotel Cero. The small parking lot with trees
played a huge role in the openness of our downtown. The new view from Big Sky Cafe
is now wall, a very boring wall. How disappointing. Now, only visitors to Hotel Cero are
able to enjoy the mountain views once appreciated by visitors and pedestrians.
Does growth require abandoning the once cool concepts San Luis Obispo became
known for i.e. Mission Plaza, The Network, Chorro Creek, and the Creamery? Soon
Downtown SLO will look like any town, lacking parking and personality.
Downtown SLO cannot be everything to anyone. We must acknowledge and be proud
of what we have been achieved and have been admired for since the 70s. This small
farm town became a place on the map -- a place to see.
Please be cautious when issuing building permits. Keep the 3 to 4 story limit. Think of
the residents, the people that work and live here before falling victim to what builders
think is good for our community.
We are at a crossroads and your decision regarding the height of 1144 Chorro will affect
the direction and the future of Downtown SLO. Once we move forward we may never be
able to go back.
Best regards,
Sandra Marshall
