Request for Signature Dear Governor Newsom, The City of San Luis Obispo urges your signature on SB 1441 (McGuire). This measure extends the sunset date on the Local Prepaid Mobile Telephony Services Surcharge Collections Act from January 1, 2021, to January 1, 2026. The Act supports local governments’ ability to collect Utility User Taxes (UUTs) from retail sales of prepaid wireless telecommunication products and services and assist the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) with administration of the program. This law has been a success. If SB 1441 is not passed and signed this year, over 100 cities with a local UUT for prepaid wireless services will lose their ability to collect revenue at the end of the year. As the City of San Luis Obispo, together with many jurisdictions throughout the State, grapples with how to maintain core services in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic it is imperative that we continue to have the ability to collect this vital funding stream. For these reasons, we are pleased to support this bill and thank you for your leadership on this important issue. Sincerely, Heidi Harmon Mayor City of San Luis Obispo Cc: San Luis Obispo City Council Governor Gavin Newsom (via email: leg.unit@gov.ca.gov) The Honorable Senator Mike McGuire (via fax: 916-651-4902 Dave Mullinax, League of California Cities, dmullinax@cacities.org Meg Desmond, League of California Cities, mdesmond@cacities.org League of California Cities, cityletters@cacities.org
