Dear Congressman Carbajal,
For over 40 years, Central Coast Hotline has served our community as the only 24/7 hotline,
providing responses that range from suicide prevention and crisis management to mental
health information and stigma reduction. In recent times, local calls have exceeded 10,000
per year, and the need is even greater as we continue to struggle with COVID-19 and its
emotional impact.
Central Coast Hotline is making a concerted effort to expand its reach and scope, adding
both a texting service and a brief therapy clinic. The former will engage our younger people
with a format they are more comfortable with, while the latter provides a sorely needed
resource for those who are uninsured and unable to access any type of therapy.
Despite being such a critical community resource, the Central Coast Hotline operates on a
small budget which combines funds from San Luis Obispo County Behavioral Health, the
Mental Health Services Act, grants from local foundations, and private donations. At a time
when the community needs this service and all its new components, a year’s worth of
Community Project Funding would be well-timed and result in benefits for many years to
come.
Thank you for your consideration,
Heidi Harmon
