Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Hi SLO Parks and Rec Commission, I am so sad, and frustrated, to be writing this email. As of this afternoon, the "Costco Jumps", a long-standing dirt jump park behind Costco (mostly on city property) was bulldozed. This is a dirt jump area that my kids and I have played at. My kids learned to jump there. I learned to jump there. Kids ride it after school. It was truly a community spot. These dirt jumps have been around a long time. Looking at SLO County's Parcel View, the vast majority of the jumps are on city property (https://gis.slocounty.ca.gov/Html5Viewer/Index.html?configBase=/Geocortex/Essentials/REST/sites/PL_LandUseView/ viewers/PL_LandUseView/virtualdirectory/Resources/Config/Default). Currently, the only city mountain bike jump park is up on Cuesta Ridge. It is NOT the kind of place kids can quickly and easily go after school - one has to park at Stenner and climb a ways to get there (not to mention driving to the end of Stenner). The Costco dirt jumps was a facility that kids could ride to after school if they had 20 minutes free. It was used daily by many kids. Parents took their kids there. I don't know how the bulldozing happened. Maybe it was a Madonna employee who thought the entire jump park was on Madonna property, because there is a small sliver of Madonna property between Costco and city property. Only one jump, the bottom most one, was on Madonna property. The rest were on city property. It's a true shame that Paso Robles and Morro Bay have dedicated, accessible, "fun" bike facilities and we in SLO have NONE. People have asked Parks and Rec for a pump track for many years. Here's my ask and suggestion: Make the Costco Jump area a dedicated bike jump zone like the Eucs is on Cuesta Ridge. We clearly can insure jump parks (we insure the Eucs somehow). The Costco jumps being gone effectively means there are no accessible bike parks for kids (or anyone) in SLO now. Make this an official bike jump zone and insure it so the community can get back to enjoying that area. Please agendize this as a future discussion and I'd be happy to show up with the kids who love that zone. 1 I am a mountain bike coach and high school teacher and personally know how many kids have fun, active, outdoor recreation at those jumps. It makes me really sad that they've lost that. I have attached a photo of the bulldozed jump area. Please.
