The purpose of this email is to request a cricket field in San Luis Obispo. My peers and I are among 30+ Members in SLO who currently play cricket at the baseball field at Laguna Middle School. It is not a proper cricket field, but we manage to play and try to have as much fun as we can. I write to you today to officially request cricket filed from SLO parks and recreation in a formal way. Please get this to your agenda items. Having a cricket field would really help us during these unprecedented times in that we can have fun and stay active, playing the game that we loved growing up. I have attached a cricket PPT which will show how a cricket ground looks and history of the game. https://twitter.com/sundarpichai/status/1281448233714122752?s=21 Thank you for your time and consideration. 1 Cricket –“A magic word in the sphere of sports.” WHAT IS CRICKET? Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players on an oval - shaped field, at the center of which is rectangular 22 -yard long pitch. One team bats, trying to score as many runs as possible while the other team bowls and fields, trying to dismiss the batsmen and thus limit the runs scored by the batting team. A run is scored by the striking bats man hitting the ball with his bat, running to the opposite end of the pitch and touching the crease there without being dismissed. The teams switch between batting and fielding at the end of an innings. In professional cricket the length of a game ranges from20 overs of six bowling deliveries per side to Test cricket played over five days. The Laws of Cricket are maintained by the International Cricket Council(ICC) and the Marylebone Cricket Club(MCC) with additional Standard Playing Conditions for Test matches and One Day Internationals. Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world behind soccer. The ICC, the game's governing body, has ten full members. The game is played particularly in Australia, the Indian subcontinent, the West Indies, Southern Africa and England. CRICKET HISTORY The game of cricket has a known history spanning from the 16th century to the present day, with international matches played since 1844, although the official history of International Test cricket began in 1877. During this time, the game developed from its origins in England into a game which is now played professionally in most of the Commonwealth of Nations. The first evidence of cricket being played was recorded in the year 1550, by the pupils of Royal Grammar School, Guildford. In the year 1611 it is reported that two young men from Sussex were punished for playing cricket instead of going to the church. The first match is recorded to have been played at Cox heath in Kent in the year 1646. Cricket was in fact a major gambling sport towards the end of the 17th century. It is recorded that in the year 1679, a 11 -a-side match was played with stakes as high as 50 guineas per side. During the 18th century cricket survived and thrived due to the huge amounts of money via monetary backing and gambling. CRICKET FIELD A cricket field is a large grass field on which the game of cricket is played.Although generally oval in shape, there is a wide variety within this:some are almost perfect circles, some elongated ovals and some entirely irregular shapes with little or no symmetry but they will have entirely curved boundaries, almost without exception. There are no fixed dimensions for the field but its diameter usually varies between 450 feet (137 m)and 500 feet (150 m).Cricket is unusual among major sports (along with golf,Australian rules football and baseball)in that there is no official rule for a fixed-shape ground for professional games. On most grounds,a rope demarcates the perimeter of the field and is known as the boundary.Within the boundary and generally as close to the center as possible will be the square which is an area of carefully prepared grass upon which cricket pitches can be prepared and marked for the matches. The pitch is where batsmen hit the bowled ball and run between the wickets to score runs, while the fielding team tries to return the ball to either wicket to prevent this. WICKETS Each Wicket consists of three wooden stumps placed in a straight line and surmounted by two wooden crosspieces called bails; the total height of the wicket including bails is 28.5 inches(720mm) and the width of the three wickets. CRICKET PITCH CRICKET STADIUM CRICKET FIELD CRICKET FORMATS •Test Cricket Matched Last up to five days. •Day International (50 overs) One inning for each team with limited overs. •Twenty20 Limited overs to complete match in around 3hrs. TEAM STRUCTURE A team consists of eleven players. Depending on his or her primary skills, a player may be classified as a specialist batsman or bowler. A well balanced team usually has five or six specialist batsmen and four or five specialist bowlers. Teams nearly always include a specialist wicket -keeper because of the importance of the fielding position. Each team is headed by a captain who is responsible for making tactical decisions such as determining the batting order, the placement of fielders and the rotation of bowlers. A person who excels in both batting and bowling is known as an all -rounder. One who excels as a batsman and wicket-keeper is known as a “wicket- keeper/batsman”, sometimes regarded as a type of all -rounder. True all- rounders are rare as most players focus on either batting or bowling skills. Extras •Bye •No ball •Wide •Leg bye DISMISSALS (OUTS) •Bold or Clean Bold •Caught •Leg before wicket (lbw) •Run out •Stumped •Hit wicket INNINGS CLOSED An innings is closed when: •Ten of the eleven batsmen are out (have been dismissed); in this case, the team is said to be “all out”. •The team has only one batsman left who can bat, one or more of the remaining players being unavailable owing to injury, illness or absence; again, the team is said to be “all out”. •The team batting last reaches the score required to win the match. •The predetermined number of overs has been bowled(in a one -day match only, commonly 50 overs; or 20 in Twenty20). •A captain declares his teams innings closed while at least two of his batsmen are not out (this does not apply in one -day limited over matches).
