Local non-profit organizations utilize the funding to provide cultural, recreational, or social activities in our community. Because of the long term impacts of COVID-19 upon the community and local organizations, the PCC has chosen to pursue a modified Cultural GIA application process and establish a modified program that meets the current needs of the community. Applications for a $4000 grant will be open throughout the year to applicable organizations and activities. The total program disbursement of $100,000 remains consistent with previous years. Additionally, the City continues to maintain the investment of $30,000 in promotional support services through the SLO Chamber of Commerce to assist the funded partners with communication to drive attendance and increase event visibility. October Application Consideration The PCC received applications from seven organizations for consideration. Five organizations: Saint Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, SLO International Film Festival, Opera SLO, the Railroad Museum, and the Civic Ballet, met the qualifications and are approved for grants from the PCC. Two organizations: Old Mission SLO and Cambria’s Allied Arts, were not approved during this month's consideration and are invited to reapply in following application periods if and when they can address the unqualified component of their application. Approved Organizations Reviewed: Saint Andrew Greek Orthodox Church Saint Andrews Church hosts the only Greek festival between Santa Barbara and Monterey. These types of festivals have educational components, because they share and keep alive Greek history, heritage, culinary and cultural traditions through dancing demonstrations and lessons, authentic live music, traditional fashion and meals. This event provides San Luis Obispo City and County residents and tourists a unique cultural and social experience of our Greek heritage.Nearly 2,000 attendees are expected each day of the event. The festival is open to the public, family-friendly, and admission and parking are free. Saint Andrew has a successful track record of holding this event since 2008. The festival has grown in attendance over the years, and relocated to the Alex Madonna Expo Center in 2019 to accommodate the increasing number of visitors. Most of the sponsors and vendors are local businesses, and a portion of the proceeds benefit local charities. San Luis Obispo International Film Festival The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival provides a year-round destination for international independent cinema, promoting diversity, understanding, education, and inclusion through engaging storytelling. The world-class annual festival in San Luis Obispo County, along with events throughout the year, provide a venue for international and local filmmakers, exposing an ever-expanding range of audiences to new ideas and experiences. The 2022 March film festival will be a hybrid festival with the return to some favorite in-person venues such as the Fremont, Palm Theatre, The Movie Experience and a new venue the Cuesta Performing Arts Center. The festival will be six days of international and local films ranging from documentaries, narrative features, music videos and more! Opera SLO Opera SLO will be hosting a grand production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera “Hansel and Gretel” will feature a large 65+ orchestra, children’s chorus, and seven leading roles played by internationally acclaimed soloists. The production will also present elaborate props, costumes, and set pieces all built locally within SLO County. The event will be produced as a “Citywide Arts Collaboration” featuring artists from several “opera-complimentary” local arts organizations: Opera San Luis Obispo, Central Coast Children’s Chorus, Civic Ballet San Luis Obispo, and the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education. San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum The San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum will be adding a new event to their annual Train Day. When started, events were held throughout the country with Amtrak's revival of passenger rail and Amtrak's approval and help. They have withdrawn from this event and the Museum will be focusing on rail history within SLO county, California, and America. There will be well known rail speakers with slide and video presentations of local, regional and national railroad themes which will appeal to local residents and attract visitors from outside the area. The Museum will be calling this event "Coast Rail". The event will take place at the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum at 1940 Santa Barbara Ave and/or Unitarian Church at 2201 Lawton Ave in San Luis Obispo. The Civic Ballet of San Luis Obispo The Civic Ballet is currently made up of 30 dancers ranging in age from 14-68 years. It has long been the pride of the Civic Ballet to have a diverse group of company dancers with all different skills, body types, and performance abilities. The Spring Gala also offers up the community new and original pieces of contemporary dance every year. In Spring of 2022, the Civic Ballet dancers will perform The Scarlett Ibis on the Spanos Stage at the PAC. This piece along with a previously produced favorite- Rodeo, will offer up the community of San Luis Obispo two diverse contemporary works for one ticket price.
