RE: Planned Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon on Broad Street at Woodbridge
To Whom it May Concern,
The intersection of Broad at Woodbridge has been identified to receive pedestrian crossing
improvements of Broad Street. This project was prioritized through neighborhood support
during the recent budget setting process. Planned for 2020, a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon
will be installed at this intersection. A Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon is a traffic control device
used to stop road traffic and allow pedestrians and bicyclists to cross safely (see included
informational flyer).
This treatment is part of the implementation of the South Broad Street Area Plan. While
full traffic signalization is planned for the future at the Broad/Woodbridge intersection,
vehicle volumes do not warrant a full signal at this time. The Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon will
provide a safe and comfortable crossing experience for pedestrians and bicyclists with less
vehicle disruption on Broad Street. Because most of the equipment can be converted to
operate as a standard traffic signal, Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons provide a benefit in
reducing the cost to convert to future signalization.
You have received this notification as you are directly adjacent to the project limits.
Attached is an image indicating the scope of the project. With implementation of the
project, approximately 6 existing on‐street parking spaces will be restricted to minimize
conflicts and improve visibility for crossing pedestrians and bicyclists. The parking
restrictions will be limited to Woodbridge adjacent to the intersection. Notices to the
residences directly adjacent to the project will receive additional notification just prior to
the start of construction.
Other locations identified for future signalization in the South Broad Street Area Plan are
Broad/Lawrence and Broad/Sweeney. These locations may also be targeted for interim
crossing improvements such as a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon if prioritized in future budget
cycles. Because Woodbridge currently provides a connection across Broad Street, the
Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon will provide residents greater access to commercial shopping
and dining on the east side to Meadow park and South Hills on the west.
