PRESENTATIONS

called to order on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at 5:30 p.m., by Chair Thomas.

Ashlee Akers and Megan Condict from Verdin, presented the recommended Public
Art Promotional Strategy for the committee’s review and adoption. The committee
enthusiastically received the presentation and discussed the style sheet need to
support the public art mark usage.

DISCUSSION
Background
The PCC has been offering Cultural GIA funding for decades. Local non-profit organizations utilize
the funding to provide cultural, recreational, or social activities in our community. Applications for a
$4000 grant will be open throughout the year to applicable organizations and activities. In addition,
organizations may apply for a grant bonus up to $1000 for participation in DEI and sustainability
practices related to the event. Each bonus is $500 for the total amount a recipient may be awarded in
bonuses would be $1000. The total program disbursement of $125,000 remains consistent with
previous years. Additionally, the City continues to maintain the investment of $30,000 in promotional
support services through the SLO Chamber of Commerce to assist the funded partners with
communication to drive attendance and increase event visibility.
First Quarter Application Consideration
The PCC received applications from 13 organizations for consideration. The following 9 organizations
met the qualifications and were approved for grants from the PCC.Cal Poly Corporation, Downtown
SLO, Festival Mozaic, History Center of San Luis Obispo County, History Revisited, Hospice SLO
County, RACE Matters SLO County, San Luis Obispo Museum of Art and San Luis Obispo Repertory
Theatre.
The following 3 organizations were not approved during this quarter ’s consideration and are invited to
reapply in following application periods if and when they can address the unqualified component of
their application:One Cool Earth, Opera SLO, and San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum.
The application submitted by the following organization,San Luis Obispo Classical Academy for the
Tastes of the Vine event did not meet the grant criteria. The organization may submit an application for
a different event to be considered.

Cal Poly Corporation
Date of the Event: September 16-18, 2022
The California International Guitar Festival aims to increase the understanding and appreciation of
guitar through the presentation of nationally and internationally renowned performers, while also
providing a platform for young performers to learn from the masters through informal master classes.
These classroom-style guitar lessons are open for public viewing, so that the audience can develop a
deeper understanding of the instrument while observing the student-teacher interaction. The Festival
will also feature a Vendor fair marketplace where guitars and guitar accessories will be made available
for purchase from dozens of vendors. The 2022 Festival will take place over 3 days from September 16
-18, 2022 and feature 18 world-renowned guitarists in seven concerts, four master-classes, and up to 35
luthiers exhibiting their hand-made instruments in a Vendor Fair. This applicant applied for the base
grant and the participation bonus money for DEI and sustainability related practices.
Downtown SLO
Date of the Event: June 24 - August 26, 2022
Downtown SLO is celebrating their 26th Annual Concerts in the Plaza 10-week series June 24, 2022 -
August 26, 2022 in Mission Plaza. This is family-friendly and the largest free concert series on the
Central Coast. Attendees experience musicians representing an array of musical genres from

Festival Mozaic
Date of the Event: July 23, 2022
Festival Mozaic brings together music lovers to enjoy premier concerts and related events in a festive
and stimulating atmosphere. The Festival was founded in 1971 to honor the composer Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart, whose influence lives on in the mosaic of classical music, composers, and
performers. More than just a series of concerts, the Festival is an immersive experience, where the
music is elevated by the backdrop of beautiful San Luis Obispo County. This applicant applied for the

Date of the Event: October 22, 2022
This seated luncheon event with table service will celebrate the Spanish heritage of Cen Dallidet
specifically, and the Spanish, Hispanic, and Latinx heritage of San Luis Obispo County more generally.
Food, wine, music, and art will fill the gardens with the alegría de vivir for which both Spain and Latin
America are celebrated. Local artists will be invited to hold pop-up galleries. A silent auction will be
full of items to spotlight cultural, artistic, and culinary diversity. This applicant applied for the base
grant and the participation bonus money for DEI and sustainability related practices.
History Revisited
Date of the Event: July 16, 2022
The Central Coast Renaissance Festival is a historically themed event, focused during the reign of
Queen Elizabeth I (1585). Over 700 costumed performers and 180+ vendor staff populate the "village."
Entertainment includes the daily battle scenes in full armor, plays, comedy, juggling, acrobatics,
authentic music, and dancing. Entertainment is on four stages and throughout the village. The festival
appeals to all ages and has family-friendly magic, a costume contest, comedy parrot show, face
painting, a Sunday treasure hunt, games, a pirate ship, and more for youngsters. This applicant applied
for the base grant only.
Hospice SLO County
Date of the Event: November 29, 2022
Light Up A Life has been a Hospice SLO County event for the past 38 years. This event traditionally
takes place in November or December. The holidays symbolize a time when friends and family gather
in celebration. It can also be a difficult and emotional time for those grieving a loss. Light Up A Life
offers the community an opportunity to come together to remember loved ones who may no longer be
here, but will never be forgotten. The ceremony includes music, inspiration, poetry, candle lighting,
and the reading of names. Light Up A Life offers the community a precious opportunity to come
together to memorialize and celebrate the lives of their loved ones who have died. This applicant
applied for the base grant and the participation bonus money for DEI and sustainability related
practices.
RACE Matters SLO County
Date of the Event: September 22, 2022 and October 8, 2022
Belonging 2022 will consist of their Belonging Block Party at SLO Farmers’ Market on September 22
and Stories Matter on October 8. The Belonging Block Party will include a Black-owned Marketplace
including both local and visiting vendors, a facilitated drum circle for children, popular local DJs, and
more. Stories Matter is an evening of live storytelling at Bang the Drum Brewery featuring local and
visiting storytellers and musicians. This applicant applied for the base grant and the participation bonus
money for DEI and sustainability related practices.
San Luis Obispo Museum of Art
Date of the Event: August 28, 2022
An exhibition of photo-realistic paintings by Alyssa Monks and associated public programming for the
enjoyment of anyone visiting downtown SLO. This exhibition will support SLOMA’s mission by
creating unique art experiences for the public to enjoy for free and providing a unique opportunity for
visual arts education for K-12 youth through guided tours and art activities inspired by the artist’s
work. This applicant applied for the base grant and the participation bonus money for DEI and

San Luis Repertory Theatre
Date of the Event: February 10 - March 10, 2023
This grant will support promotions for SLO REP’s 2023 Gala Musical: Ring of Fire, The Music of
Johnny Cash. From the songbook of Johnny Cash comes this unique, original musical about love and
faith, struggle and success, rowdiness and redemption, and the healing power of home and family. The
Music of Johnny Cash – will appeal to a broad audience demographic, from their long-term patrons to

Q4 Stat Report
Summary of Performance
In Q4, Verdin launched the neighborhood campaign to promote visitation throughout a variety of
communities in SLO. The first creative set that ran in this campaign was the Railroad District video,
which shows a local family exploring the attractions in the area. Additional paid media outlets included a
radio sponsorship with KCBX and a print ad with SLO Life Magazine.
In addition, two new social media stories were created and implemented to promote local spending
during popular shopping periods. These creative sets focused on Mother’s Day and Father’s
Day/Graduation, and they ran as paid ads on Facebook and Instagram stories.
Finally, the “Love SLO Like You Mean It” campaign continued to run in the programmatic space,
featuring the wellness, retail and entertainment video vignettes.
