This project was undertaken as a part of a research project to establish the location of both
historic archaeological sites and historical standing structures within the City of San Luis
Obispo to enable the City to comply with the recently adopted Archaeological Guidelines.
This project was part of the Archaeological Training Program for the City that was
conducted by Bertrando & Bertrando Research Consultants and was an additional
development of the request to update the City's Inventory of Archaeological Resources.

Information of this type is very useful in making cultural resource evaluations prior to new land
usage and development and should benefit all agencies and departments involved in these
processes

"PETITIONS FOR LAND IN THE CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO"
INTRODUCTION
The original papers on which this Index is based are currently stored in the City Vault The
documents fall into three sections that are listed below and have to do with requests for parcels of
land within the City The first two sections were determined by the dates of the documents while
the City Certificate of Purchase forms the third Many of the documents are fragmented and are
in extremely fragile condition There are also a few atypical and late claims that are a part of the
index Each of the three sections is listed alphabetically by the name of the person filing the
request for land Sketch maps that illustrate a structure on or near the petitioned parcel have been
included at the back of the Index
Section I concerns documents that were filed when the town was first organized in May, 1859
At this time the first ordinances were drawn up and the first requests for land were initiated by
residents Some of these residents had occupied their parcels for some time and were requesting
formalized title to their land These initial documents only consist of a legal description and do
not include a map Sometimes the description will mention a structure being on the parcel
Section II has been divided into two parts
Pan A - In March, 1868, the Legislature passed an Act "to Settle the Title to Lands in the
Town of San Luis Obispo," and the bulk of the land requests came shortly thereafter
The accepted format was on a Petition for Grant form accompanied by a sketch map
The map sometimes, but not always, included reference to a structure on the parcel
There are duplicate requests (some because the first form undoubtedly was incorrectly
filed or because two people were after the same piece of land) For the most part, land
was granted to those having resided and/or improved the parcel prior to filing The
requests in this section relate to the period between 1869 and 1872
Part B - This section contains requests for land and documents that relate to later time
periods dating from 1873 to 1909 that were filed to clear title and omissions from
earlier requests
Section III covers the final type of document in the collection, the Certificate of Purchase that
was Issued by the City Most of these documents were issued in 1 871

INDEXING PROBLEMS
Writing and penmanship styles that have changed significantly over the last hundred years
combined with fading ink have made the reading of many of the documents difficult When
possible, at least one date on the document was included in the Index It was also not unusual for
two or three spellings of the applicant's name to appear on the same document Generally, the
spelling on the document cover was used Various spellings of the Hispanic names was in
particular a common occupance
The sketch maps reproduced are those showing a structure or feature placement The maps
accompany the land requests in Section II documents only Often the document will specify a
house and improvements but they are not illustrated on the sketch maps and consequently were
not reproduced Often the structure on the sketch map is on an adjacent property, however, the
sketch maps are alphabetized only by the name on the document
