HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-16-05 Council Memo Office of the City Clerk Memo To: Mayor Romero and Council Members Via: Ken Hampian, CAO cc: Jonathan Lowell, City Attorney From: Audrey Hooper, City Clerk Date: May 16, 2005 Re: Election Campaign Regulations Review Committee Chapter 2.40 of the Municipal Code, Election Campaign Regulations, will sunset on June 30, 2006, unless it is readopted prior to that date. Section 2.40.150 requires that: "At least nine months prior to the expiration of this chapter (i.e., September 30, 2005), the Council shall appoint a committee of at least five citizens to study the efficacy of this chapter. The committee shall complete its deliberations and report its findings to the City Council on or before January 31, 2006." Past practice has been for Council Members to nominate citizens to be appointed to this committee. The Council Liaison Subcommittee consisting of the Mayor and Vice Mayor has then worked with the City Clerk to recruit five or more individuals from those nominations. The Subcommittee's recommendations are then presented to Council for consideration and appointment. These appointments have included former treasurers of campaign committees. If Council would like a list of campaign treasurers for the past two elections, or former candidates, please let me know and I'll be glad to provide this information. Please provide me with the names of your nominees no later than June 1st. I will then work with the Council Liaison Subcommittee to provide recommendations for appointment by the Council at your June 21st Council meeting.
