Jonas ona Community Development Director PREPARED BY: Jeanette Di Leo, Long Range Planner SUBJECT: Wildflower Program for Spring, 1993 CAO RECOMMENDATION: That the City Council accept a donation of $500 from Texaco Oil Company to the City of San Luis Obispo for wildflower propagation. BACKGROUND: Some members of the City Council have expressed interest in a program which would provide for wildflower propagation within or around the perimeter of San Luis Obispo. Such a program would involve disseminating wildflower seeds in or around the City in highly visible locations. The program was perceived as an easy way of, making areas of the City and the surrounding hillsides more colorful and beautiful during spring. Various oil companies have public relation programs that offer wildflower seeds or money for seeds to jurisdictions. Staff contacted numerous companies to see if they would be interested in helping the City of San Luis Obispo with a wildflower planting program. Texaco responded to the City's correspondence. STAFF COMMENTS: In March, 1992 , Oliver Carter of Texaco Oil Company contacted City staff. He noted that Texaco Oil Company would be willing to donate $500 to the City of San Luis Obispo for the City to obtain wildflower seeds. On May 5, 1992, Oliver Carter (Marketing Consultant for Texaco) will come to San Luis Obispo to present the check to the City. It is anticipated that wildflower seeds would be propagated in the Fall of 1992 by City staff. Only wildflowers native to the San Luis Obispo area would be planted. With the money from Texaco it is anticipated that approximately 25 pounds of wildflower seeds could be purchased. Twenty-five pounds of seed would cover roughly two acres. As planned, the seeds would be distributed on public or private lands. Prior to any proposal to seed private property permission from an individual landowner would be obtained.
