TO: Council Colleagues FROM: Council Member Dodie Williams SUBJECT: Council Liaison Report - Update on Mardi Gras The September 29 meeting of Mardi Gras members and City staff, which Council Member Roalman and I attended, was very positive and productive. Many of the issues and questions were resolved, with committees established to respond to remaining City concerns. The Police Department request that one person oversee, and be responsible for, monitors was addressed. That name will be provided to the City today. The PD will provide training in early January once a list of monitors' names is available. Mardi Gras will seek service club assistance for monitors. Mardi Gras has agreed to meet with the BIA, Chamber and Parks & Rec. Dept. staff to discuss methods of cooperation, fund-raising, etc. A maximum of ten motorized vehicles will be allowed in the 1996 parade. Forty-five parade entries will be permitted. If more requests are received, the City must be notified prior to acceptance by Mardi Gras. It was agreed that Mardi Gras events will not be advertised out of the local area and that any advertising will stress the family nature of the parade. In this regard, the Chamber of Commerce has been asked not to send its usual press releases to metropolitan areas, national publications, etc. A subcommittee of City staff and Mardi Gras has been formed to determine the most feasible barricade set-up. Another subcommittee of City staff and Mardi Gras will address monitor recruitment and training. Both City staff and Mardi Gras members were pleased with the new level of communication, cooperation and understanding that resulted from this meeting.
