Gjj% COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT . REM Nu
FROM: Michael D. McCluskey, Public Works Director '
Prepared by: Remie Gwm, Transportation Technician
SUBJECT: 1995 Holiday Food Fare Program on SLO Transit
CAO RECOMMENDATIONS:
By motion approve the 1995 Food Fare Program, waiving fares in exchange for food donations by
passengers, during the week of Saturday, December 9 through Friday, December 15, 1995.
DISCUSSION:
For the past several years, San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority (SLORTA) has participated in
a holiday season food drive, to help families and individuals during the holiday season. This year they
are asking the participation of SLO Transit and other transit agencies in San Luis Obispo County.
Last year, the food drive collected 2,500 lbs of food items. This year, since many food items are not
canned, they suggest a"Food Fare" slogan where the drivers will accept any.commercially packaged food
item for human consumption as payment for a one way ride. The drivers will collect the food and save
it at the bus maintenance facility until Friday, December 15. The collected food will be picked up by
SLORTA then distributed by the Food Bank Coalition to food programs around the county.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Projected revenue from cash fares for 1995/96 is $67,000. Cash fares collected during a typical week
in December are approximately $1,200. Projected lost fares for this program are estimated at $300.00,
resulting in the projected revenue decreasing to $66,700.

Dear Harry,
Our "I CAN RIDE WEEK" last year was a hugh success. With the donations we received in
lieu of fares, we were able to donate the equivalent of 7 tons of food to the Food Bank Coalition
of San Luis Obispo County, for distribution county wide. We are in the preliminary planning
stages for this year's event and have scheduled December 9th through the 15th for this year's
program. We are inviting your transit system to join us. We realize that you will need to get
your board's approval to take canned food donations in lieu of fares so this year we are
extending our invitation early. All donations will be bused by Santa to the Food Bank
warehouse in Paso Robles on the afternoon of December 15th, for county wide distribution.
Please consider taking part in this year's event.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Susan M. Medina at
781-4472.
Sincerely,
Alan G. Cantrell
