SUBJECT: Resolution supporting The Business Improvement
Association's application for the Great American Main Street
Award.
CAO RECOMMENDATION: Adopt a resolution recognizing the partnership between
the City and Business Improvement Association and supporting the nomination of the
Downtown Centre for a Great American Main Street Award.
DISCUSSION
The Edward D. Jones financial services firm and the National Trust for Historic
Preservation's Main Street Center are cosponsoring the Great American Main Street Award
to recognize the revitalization effort in downtowns across the country. The BIA intends to
submit an application to compete in this award program. As such, the City Council must
adopt a resolution recognizing our partnership with the Downtown and supporting the
application.
Judging criteria includes evidence of public/private partnership; broad based community
support; tangible achievements; balanced activities in physical improvements, business
development, marketing and organizational development; preservation of historic
properties; and innovative approaches to revitalization.
The presentation of the 1998 Great American Main Street Awards will be made during a
special ceremony at the opening session of the National Town Meeting on Main Street in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Monday May 18, 1998.
CONCURRENCES
The downtown Business Improvement Association Board of Directors supports the entry
on behalf of the Association.
FISCAL IMPACT
A$50 entry fee is required, which will be provided by the BIA.
