SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT RECOMMENDATION
TO THE CULTURAL HERITAGE COMMITTEE
RECOMMENDATION
Appoint Amy Kardel to fill an unexpired term ending March 31, 1998, and thank Alice Loh for her
service to the committee.
DISCUSSION
At their Council meeting of October 7, 1997, the City Council appointed Cultural Heritage
Committee member Alice Loh to the Architectural Review Commission. Ms. Loh has since
officially resigned from the CHC creating this vacancy.
Early last July, the Council Subcommittee interviewed six candidates to fill three vacancies. At
that time, the subcommittee recommended that Amy Kardel be appointed to fill the next vacancy
occurring on the CHC and indicated this in a letter to her. When Ms. Kardel was contacted with
regard to her desire to serve at this time, she indicated that she would very much enjoy serving on
the CHC should she be appointed.

Why I wish to serve on the Cultural Heritage Committee
Was it the buffalo nickel I found under the mantle while we were renovating
the interior of our 1920's Spanish bungalow last year? Or was it the art reflecting
the California mission period I enjoyed in the Prado museum in Madrid? These
were important moments in my reflections upon my relationship to San Luis
Obispo's history. However, after recently moving back to my native San Luis
Obispo from Europe, I am more interested than ever in the cultural heritage of our
unique community. Having lived and worked in numerous European historic
districts for almost 8 years, I am eager to share my perspective on those successful
and enjoyable spaces. Now that I live and work in San Luis Obispo's old town, I
enjoy daily the historic landscape the makes up our community. I want to give
something back.
I feel that I could contribute a fresh point of view, organizational and meeting
management skills, as well as a love of knowledge for the history of our unique
community. It is against this background that I wish to contribute my talents and
efforts to my home town, as well as to learn more about our rich local history.

On behalf of the City, I want to thank you for your interest in serving on the Cultural
Heritage Committee. We are fortunate to have received applications from many qualified
individuals like yourself, this made the decision a difficult one. Although you were not
selected for appointment this time, we were very impressed with your interview. Should
another vacancy arise during my term on the Council Subcommittee to the CHC, I would
be pleased to recommend your appointment.
In selecting advisory body members, the City tries to achieve a balance of skills and
backgrounds among the members in order to create a committee that will provide diverse
viewpoints on programs identified in its enabling legislation and goals.
