SUBJECT: MANHOLE AND WETWELL COATING PROJECT: SPECIFICATION
NO. 9202.
CAO RECOMMENDATION
1. Approve plans and specifications for " Manhole and Wetwell Coating Project: Specification
No. 9202."
2. Authorize staff to advertise for bids and authorize the CAO to award the contract if the lowest
responsible bid is within the Engineer's Estimate.
DISCUSSION
Some of the manholes in the sanitary sewer system are experiencing deterioration. To protect the
manholes a protective coating can be applied. The manholes scheduled for coating are ten
manholes in Meadow park and four manholes connected to pumping stations. Those connected
to the pumping stations, commonly referred to as Wetwells, are particularly prone to damage by
sewer gases as they store sewage between pumping cycles. Replacement of the manholes would
be more expensive and disruptive than coating.
CONCURRENCES
Community Development Department has given this proj ect a categorical exemption.
FISCAL IMPACT
The projects are identified as part of the wastewater collection system improvements in the 1997-
'99 Financial Plan,Appendix B,page 66.
Construction: $ 70,000
Contingencies: $ 10.000
Engineer's Estimate: $ 80,000
The project will include some repairs of the manholes. The extent of the repairs is to be
determined after cleaning is completed. Due to the unknown extent of the repairs, higher than
normal contingencies are planned.
