This is very good news for the citizens of San Luis Obispo County, since there is now the likely prospect that this entire roadway will be improved within the next few years. Rai Improvements ;; = . The director reported that SLOCOG staff is working with Caltrans on a$1.1 million program to modify the railroad signal system near the San Luis Obispo. This project will expedite train movement and reduce delays to passenger trains. Unmet Transit Needs The Board held an unmet transit needs hearing with very little testimony regarding San Luis Obispo's unmet needs, although there is some pressure to extend our route to provide regular service to the airport. There was a great deal of testimony from residents in the Nipomo/Ocean area. Obviously, there is a clear and continuing need for additional bus service which will be the County's obligation to fund. Because of the obvious need, the Board requested a consultant study on routing, service schedules and costs to provide the desired service. :SLORTA Operational Improvements:_ Currently, SLORTA buses must sometimes double park on Osos alongside the Courthouse until bus parking becomes available. The Board directed staff to work out an improved parking plan with the City, County and SLORTA staff to work out a solution. This may result in the loss of some parking spaces either full or part-time in the Courthouse/City Hall area The director reported that$524,000 of a state grant for development of the Multi-Model Center along Santa Barbara Avenue may be at risk if the funds are not expended by 6/30/99. City staff is aware of this deadline and is working to expedite the project. DR:ss c: John Dunn L1-1
