SUBJECT: Retail Size Limitation 8 pR IFf
I have been giving a lot of thought to the retail size limitation ordinance, which we have spent a
lot of time discussing, but so far have failed to adopt.
Our last attempt came later in the meeting than was intended, and I have found that my mind has
become clearer on the subject after a little time to reflect on where we are. I think we are close,
and I think it is very important for us to have in place a store size limit, and the sooner the better.
To this end, I propose the following:
1. We should bring this issue back to our agenda at the very next opportunity,to try once
more.
(l 2. We should limit the discussion to what I see are the three main points:
A. 45,000 - 55,000 sq. ft. in C-T and C-N.
B. 60,000 in C-C, C-R and C-S, with the possibility of going up to 110,000 if criteria
are met.
C. Exemptions,.i.e., existing retail establishments and complete planning
applications.
I think we may be close to being able to find some agreement on these points. It may be some
time before the Planning Commission and the Architectural Review Commission are able to send
us the recommendations we have asked for regarding the criteria and design guidelines. Those
alone will give us plenty to talk about. It seems to me that we can adopt the basic ordinance
now, and amend it to include the criteria and guidelines later.
Thanks, and I'll see you all on Tuesday.
