Activity Highlights
Health Care Issues(Continuedl
Gale Gascho and I met this week to discuss ways the EVC might better serve the health care industry. Orale
expects the industry to grow over the next few years, meaning it will be larger than 1/6 of our economy.
While specific actions are still not clear,we will keep tuned to this community to see if we can be of
assistance.
International Trade.Consultant
You will be hearing more about international trade consultant Ray Bowman, who will be helping us help
small businesses expand their presence in the international trade arena. Part of his work will be funded by
the TANF grant we have received. We are exploring ways to fund ongoing work in this field
Cuesta College Faculty Orientation
I served on a community panel fora Cuesta College Faculty Orientation program held at the North County
Campus. It was a good opportunity to provide some exposure to the EVC,while meeting new faculty.
There appears to be some opportunities for the EVC to work more closely with Cuesta in their intem
program. I also had a short discussion with an economics teacher who is interested in seeing if we can
develop a working relationship in our efforts to strengthen our economic information base.
Executive Committee
The Executive Committee met this week to carry out the personnel assignment given to it by the board and
to bring forth nominations for board member replacements. The committee will be presenting their
recommendations at our next board meeting
Neat Week's Key Activities
Holiday
January 21"is one of the EVC standard holidays. We will be back in the offi-ce on Tuesday.
Shapine San Luis Obispo
The San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce is holding an advisory body information form on the topic of
"Shaping the Future of San Luis Obispo". We will be attending to listen to the input that could also
influence our future activity.
BuyUSA.rnm Training
The U.S.Department of Commerce will be conducting training with our staff.on the BuyUSA coni
program before the board meeting next Wednesday. We will become an affiliate member of the program
Jerry Vaughn, the regional director will also brief the board on the program
Affordable Housing Trust Fend
I am part of the leadership group for the Affordable Housing Trust Fund They will hold a meeting next
week We will discuss an endorsement of the program at our board meeting, which is prior to their
meeting. The EVC has consistently been in favor of programs that promote affordable housing for
employees We are concerned that the details of affordable housing programs will provide workable
solutions.
Board Meeting
Our monthly Board meeting will be held at the Creekside Center(normal venue)at 3 P.M on Wednesday,
January 23nd' This is an important meeting as the board finalizes a decision on the president's position and
votes for new board members. Please plan on attending if at all possible.
Fishing Expedition
An established high tech firm from out of state is exploring moving to California We met with them early
last year. In following up aur past contacts;we found out they had been invited to explore Fresno. We
reestablished the contact and they will visit San Luis Obispo next week. We have set up meeting with key
people that might influence their decision.
Economic Development Director's Team
The EDDT meets next week and will meet principles of the above-mentioned firm. Cities should ensure
someone is covering for your city.
ECON Watch
Tourism and Lodging
This industry continues to have mixed results. It appears coastal destination facilities are staying
reasonably busy. Those properties that are depending on business travelers and other transients are
continuing to experience a down tura
Building Industry
Itis often said that the building industry leads the overall economy by 9 months. If that holds true, things
are looking well for our region.. Currently the local building job market is down a little, however the
industry organizations and building materials people are seeing a lot of construction projects forming out in
the future,as reflected in requests for bids, permits, etc. The mild weather has helped the building activity,
not only locally but also nation-wide. There are several interesting local projects in the hopper. Some will
get regional attention when announced Nationally, the building industry has weathered the economic
down tum well., The Wall Street Journal reports national permit activity is up,indicating future building
activity.
Car Market
At least one local car dealer is reporting continuing brisk activity in car sales.
Economic.Guessing
Pundits are lining up to guess when the economic recession will be over. Claims for initial unemployment
are down. The Federal Reserve Bank reports manufacturing activity in the Mrd-Atlantic up. The
Undersecretary of the U.S..Department of Commerce,Kathleen Cooper reported that the economy might
have bottomed out looking at indicators, however she made several caveats to her prediction such as`eve
need to be very cautious." The stock market has continued to be volatile this past week IN spite of better
than predicted high tech earnings reports, the DJIA was down from 9988 to 9772. When Dell Computer
announced an increase in revenues and earnings expectations for the 0 quarter the market moved up but
then closed down 2.9%. The University of Michigan reported a surprising improvement in consumer
confidence for the fust half of January.
CPI
The U.S.Department of Labor announced that the Consumer Price Index(Urban)declined 0.4%in
December. It has increased 1.6%over the last 12 months. During that time frame, transportation costs are
down 3.8%;energy costs down 13.0%,medical care costs up 4.7%and food/beverage costs up 2.8%.
Local High Tech Announcement

Productions of Arroyo Grande have announced their merger. They will combine their operation at the
Aspect Media site in San Luis Obispo.
