HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/05/2002, - PUBLIC COMMENT an March 4, 2002 Dear Planning Commission: ` I have been a resident of San Luis Obispo for 23 years. Even though it's been over 2 decades I still appreciate the natural beauty of the environment and strict old fashion planning & building codes that the City/County still enforces. That's what keeps the charm and personality of San Luis Obispo alive. Living on the Foothill side of town (Del Mar Ct. & now Ramona Dr.), I've seen a lot of changes in the neighborhood. We often walk around the corner where the Child Care Center resides. We were very pleased when the owner spent the money to put up a permanent fence safe for the children and passers by. The white lattice added that white picket fence look we're so happy to have in the neighborhood. I appreciate not having those squares filled with dirt outside the center because my children always seem pick up the trash and dirt. Now when we walk past we just see the children having fun. I have been informed how displeased the commission is with the Schools improvements. As a neighborhood resident I am in support of the schools changes and encourage you to rethink your decision. The Child Care Center's improvements are an asset to our neighborhood, fitting in with it's new facelift. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Betsy Foster' 282 Ramona Drive San Luis Obispo, CA 93405 544-4036 ;X-02Z PROTEST TO EXPANSION OF BISHOP'S PEAK SCHOOL DATE: March 5,2002 FROM: Barbara Collins-546-0600,bacslo .chartennet.neighborhood resident PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Keep Bishop's Peak School open as a small neighborhood school with no expansion. If no alternative to expansion, the neighborhood would like to keep recreational space. REASONS TO OBJECT TO EXPANSION: 1. Traffic. How many students at Teach School ride the bus? How many are driven to school by parents? The traffic on the streets leading to Bishop's Peak School will become even more congested. A_traffic study needs to be done.because. Patricia is a high volume,traffic-impacted street Neighbors at Craig Way have complained of damage to their vehicles parked out on the street(side-swiping). Neighbors on Highland,Craig Way and Jaycee have complained that they cannot get out of their driveways due to the tfaffic. In the evient of rain or mud, parents will not drop off their children on Highland where the children will have to walk through the rain and mud, thereby creating more traffic on Jaycee. 2. Loss of Greenspace. When Bishop's Peak School is not in session, the grass area becomes the park and sports ground for our neighborhood. We do not have a close park for this area Once the field is reduced for a new parking lot and expanded asphalt play area, that greenspace is gone forever even if the size of Bishop's Peak School is reduced in the future. 3: Safety. Safety concerns include the safety of the children walking to Bishop's Peak School who have to cross busy streets and cross the entrance to the new Bishop's Peak parking lot. In addition, the spaces between the portable buildings are places where children and transients can hide and conduct inappropriate activities. Also, are there enough school buses to remove all the children in the event of a nuclear emergency? 4. Visual. The portable buildings out campus are ugly, have different rooftops, and are not well maintained because they have peeling paint on the heat pumps and show rust on the back. IF THE PROTESTED EXPANSION CONTINUES,HERE ARE SOME CONCESSIONS TO OUR NEIGHBORHOOD: I. Construct a new permanent wing of needed classrooms at Bishop's Peak School to eliminate the portable buildings. 2: Conduct a traffic study of Patricia,Highland; Craig Way; and Jaycee Streets. Install a sidewalk along the Highland Street edge for expanded drop-off. 3. Petition the City to install stop signs on Patricia at the corners of both Craig Way intersects. 4 Petition the City to remove the bus stop which is in the middle of the school cross walk on Patricia at Craig Way. 5. Install wire mesh fencing between atiy portables so no one can climb over it and no one can hide behind it. 1 Added parking Extended drop off curb rr JAMQU JW .Potentials dditional reloca e ' (l r-j 1 • ' { class rg s(2) .. _. ., LACK.
