HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/05/2002, A1 - APPOINTMENT OF NEW SLO DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION BOARD MEMBERS council M` °��3-s_a j accnba Pcpont CITY OF SAN L U IS O B I S P O FROM: Deborah Holley, SLO Downtown Association Administrators' SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT OF NEW SLO DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION BOARD MEMBERS CAO RECOMMENDATION Ratify the appointments of Correne Weaver, Kathi Main, Brad Bilsten, Craig Boisvert and Frank Merson to the San Luis Obispo Downtown Association Board of Directors. DISCUSSION The SLO Downtown Association completed its annual elections in February for the Board of Directors positions with terms expiring March 31, 2002. In accordance with the Association's by-laws, the membership voted on a slate of candidates to appoint these members for one two- year term. The ballots were tabulated by the nominating committee and the election results will be confirmed at the upcoming March 12 Board meeting. New Board members require City Council approval before they can assume their positions on April 1, 2002. As required in the by-laws, all elected members are owners or managers of businesses in the Downtown Association district. The following Board members were elected to serve until March 31, 2004: Correne Weaver Beauty Unlimited (2nd term) Kathi Main Kevin Main Jewelery (151 term) Brad Bilsten B. Anthony Jewelers (151 term) Frank Merson Long's Pharmacy (I"term) Craig Boisvert Serengeti West (15t term) ATTACHMENTS Candidates' biographical information provided to membership with ballots. - _ ATTACHMENT I Meet the Downtown Association Board of Directors' Candidates Frank Merson,Manager Long's Pharmacy,717 Marsh Member,Promotions Committee A life-long resident of San Luis Obispo,Frank Merson has been employed with Long's .. •:� Downtown Pharmacy for two years. He attended San Luis High School and graduated from Cuesta and Cal Poly with degrees in Radio and TV production and Business Marketing,respectively.During his tenure at Long's,he received the Long's World- Class customer service award.Frank's personal philosophy is to support Downtown / stores as both a patron and a fellow businessman and recommending his customers shop and eat at Downtown locations. An active participant in the Promotions Commit- tee for the past two years,he frequently donates or offers bargain rates on goods and n services from Long's. Frank plans to continue working on the Promotions Committee and says he may join another committee. Frank feels he can benefit Downtown by "contributing personally and professionally by drawing business Downtown." Craig A.Boisvert,Manager&Jewelry Designer Serengeti West,951 Monterey St. A Central Coast resident since 1987,Craig A. Boisvert has spent the last 10 years living in San Luis Obispo. "I know a good thing when I see it,"he claims,"and I'm making no plans to move!"With this in mind, Craig says he's committed"to having a voice in what goes on Downtown."He also says, "I'd like to change the public's view r. of the `bad' parking situation Downtown and would like to promote the `Downtown Mall' concept."Boisvert has worked in the jewelry business for the past.25 years designing and making jewelry. Presently located on the busy corner of Monterey and Morro at Serengeti West for almost 10 years now,Boisvert frequently directs visitors to the closest parking structure and Downtown's main tourist attraction,the Mission. Sidewalk plaques,embedded in the sidewalk with arrows pointing towards parking areas and the Mission,he feels, would be a real asset to Downtown. Craig also thinks an information kiosk,posted with Downtown business advertisements that rotate on an on-going basis, would also benefit Downtown. Correne Weaver,Managing Partner Beauty Unlimited,895 Higuera Chair,Economic Activities Committee Passion for Downtown San Luis Obispo is what Correne Weaver hopes to contribute to the community as a member of the Downtown Association Board. An active member of the Board for the past seven years,(with a one-year interruption between terms), she is currently the Economic Activities Committee Chair,and is President-elect for the 2002-2003 term. Correne recently became managing partner of Beauty Unlimited on Higuera,purveyor of upper-end hair, skin, and bath products. She feels her past experience in retail as Sales Manager at Express,Operations Manager at Coverings, combined with her current work with Beauty Unlimited can contribute to her efforts as a member of the board. Correne says she believes in the Downtown Association and "wants to see Downtown be the best it can be`'and she thinks"with this organization we can take it to the next level." ��a ATTACHMENT 1 Brad Bilsten,Co-Owner Gold Concept, 740 Higuera, B.Anthony & Company,674 Higuera A 30-year business owner Downtown,Brad Bilsten co-owns two successful jewelry stores. He opened Gold Concept in The Network Mall,where he stayed for eighteen years before moving to 740 Higuera.He has served on both the Promotions and Parking Committees,the latter on which he served 10 years. Brad feels that he could be a contributing member of the Downtown Association s� l Board through his devotion to the success of smaller, privately-owned busi- nesses.He is a firm supporter in the development of privately owned stores and r knows he can help further the success of Downtown. He feels that he has many valuable ideas toward this end. Kathi Main,Co-owner Kevin Main Jewelry,720 Higuera Member Economic Activities Committee Current Board member Kathi Main and her husband Kevin have owned their Downtown store,Kevin Main Jewelry, since 1998. Kathi was born and raised ` a in Cayucos and before her move to the jewelry business she spent more than 25 t, years as a banker with Mid State Bank. She hopes her history with the Central Coast and experience with banking will aid her in helping San Luis Obispo continue to be a thriving community. "I look at San Luis Obispo as a neighbor- ., p _ hood and I want to do my part to make sure it remains viable." She currently serves on the Economic Activities Committee and would like to continue her work with the Downtown Association. Kathi feels it's important to stay con- nected with your neighbors and fellow business owners in order to know what's going on and contribute to the Downtown's direction and success.
