Additionally, programs must be developed and refined for an aging population to meet the needs of the young, old, and physically challenged. What I hope to accomplish: I hope to see the Damon/Garcia project through to completion. Additionally, I hope to see that the re-model of the rec. center is completed and that additional facilities, such as a therapy pool, come to fruition to meet the needs of our growing population of seniors. Improvements to existing sports facilities, which serve both youth and adult sports, is a continuing concern. If nominated, I would be honored to chair the commission. Meeting attendance: I have attended all but two commission meetings in four years. I have chaired several in the capacity of Vice Chair, a post I've held for two years. I have represented the commission at several City Council meetings. I have regularly represented the commission on the Mayor's Youth Task Force and I have attended the Mayor's Quarterly Meetings with chairs of various commissions. My observations are that meetings seem to bog down and at times and could be streamlined. Commissioners should come prepared, having read materials provided so that it is not necessary for staff to read through it aloud. It is also my observation that the staff of the Parks and Rec. Dept. is a dedicated, hard-working committed group of professionals, open to new ideas and willing to face various obstacles,.be they political, community based,or physical,to work for the good of the community. Qualities, experience and expertise: Four years of service, two as Vice Chair of the commission. I am also a consumer of Park and Rec. services. I have been an active participant in adult sports and continue to participate as an adult softball official. Professionally, I supervise 110 employees in. numerous facilities throughout San Luis Obispo County and manage a$3.6 million budget. Having no personal agenda, I believe I bring common sense and sound reasoning to the commission. I am familiar with many aspects of liability and labor law. As a 33-year resident of San Luis Obispo, I have participated on, and chaired many charitable committees, commissions and boards. Key issues: Moving forward, and completing the Damon/ Garcia sports complex. Completion of the rec. center remodel. Studying the feasibility of "Parkways," and creating canopies in various parts of the city. Continuing our environmental programs, creating greater awareness of the value of the area we live in and are surrounded by. Protecting our existing parks and facilities and developing additional programs for maximum utilization. - In conclusion: I have enjoyed my four years of service to the city and believe I have made a contribution. I believe the knowledge acquired will be of benefit should I be selected for another term. Thank you for your consideration. Signed: 1/9/02 • a6VISORV Boa a L1cavon Attachment'. Why do you want to serve on a City advisory body? I am interested in expanding my involvement in the community and contributing to the well being of the city of SLO. Following political and governmental issues has grown from an interest and a hobby to a desire to work in a capacity which directly impacts society and the public as a whole. I believe the advisory bodies are a great opportunity to serve the public and to learn more about the operations of the city and government in general. 2. Why do you want to be a member of the Parks & Recreation Commission and what do you hope to accomplish? I am active in my use of the parks-and recreation areas of SLO and believe that they enhance our communities and society. I would like to become a member of this advisory board as I strongly believe that parks and recreation require attention and support from the government in order to meet the present and future needs of the public. I welcome the opporamity to contribute to the enhancement of SLO's existing parks, the amenities within our recreational areas, and programs that benefit members of all ages in our community. 3. Have you ever attended a meeting of the Parks &Recreation Commission or another City advisory body? What observations did you make? Yes. The format and proceedings of the meeting are quite formal as they follow a structured format. This is done in order to ensure consistency across various advisory bodies and continuity within advisory bodies as membership changes over time. In general, the process allows for much interaction between.the advisory board and the public. The deliberation amongst the advisory board members is open to the public. This allows the public to not only hear the final outcome of the issue but to understand why the decision was made. It also ensures that all aspects of the decision are open and available for public review. 1 `)j suppLementaL qu,otionname — panks G uecaeation comfiission Attachment9, pace 2 Page 4of 4 4. What qualities, experience and expertise make you a good candidate for the Parks & Recreation Commission? I believe that I posess many assets that would make me a valuable member of the Parks and Recreation Commission. Fast and foremost,I act with integrity and I am a leader who is able to create and implement a far- reaching vision and plan. My professional career, amongst many other things, has entailed leading and managing people as well as planning and managing projects. These qualities, coupled with my knowledge and enthusiasm for the outdoors and recreation, would allow me to help create an effective program for the city of SLO. 5. In your view, what are some key issues in SLO relating to parks and recreation? One of the biggest issues facing SLO with regard to parks and recreation is the challenge of balancing development and the preservation of our natural resources. As pressure to develop more housing continues to mount,it will become increasingly difficult to maintain a parks and recreation program that meets the needs of a growing community. Another challenge is to meet the recreational needs of three distinct groups in the community of SLO-families, students, and retirees. The diversity of our community demands that the Parks and Recreation Commission develop a comprehensive program to meet all of the varying needs of many individuals. 6. Is there any additional information about yourself you'd like to share? (Please feel free to attach a resume, if you have one). Attached is a resume. In addition,.from January'01 —August'01 I traveled around the world. Also,I have been employed focally at Dioptics Medical Products as a Planning&Procurement Manager since October`01. I intentionally left a very fruitful career at Hewlett-Packard in order to travel around the world and to pursue a career in the public sector. I traveled in order to broaden my perspectives by observing and participating in various cultures and societies. After my travels,I moved to SLO as I believe this is one of the most beautiful, well rounded, and unique communities in the world and'I am very pleased to call SLO home. I am excited about the possibility of serving on an advisory board as I believe I will learn and grow as an individual and be able to make a very positive impact upon the organization and the community v ' Signature` Date: 3/
