Why do you want to serve on a City advisory body? I have lived in San Luis Obispo for approximately 8 years. In that time I have attended two programs at Cal Poly and was fortunate enough to get a job in downtown. I now hope to be more involved and contribute to the debate on how to maintain and enhance the City. An important part of adding to the community, I believe, is through volunteer service and keeping informed and contributing to the issues facing the community. 2. Why do you want to be a member of the BAC and what do you hope to accomplish? I would like to be a part of the process that determines the priorities and process that will lead to a better, more complete bicycle system. As the city evolves, its transportation system must be developed accordingly in a way that facilitates the use of all modes of transportation. Pedestrian and bicycle issues are incredibly important to the community. A small community with a large state university within it has great opportunities to have a high level of ridership. Promoting the effective use of limited funds to complete the bicycle system, while enhancing safety would be my primary goals. 3. Have you ever attended a meeting of the BAC or another City advisory body? What observations did you make? I have attended meetings of the SLO Bicycle advisory committee(BAC), as well as meetings of the San Luis Obispo County BAC, the San Luis Obispo County Bicycle Coalition, and Cal Poly's Bicycle Task Force. During my experiences with the bodies, I have observed and appreciated the many concerns of the different members. All issues that I have heard are serious, legitimate issues. 4. What qualities, experience and expertise make you a good candidate for the BAC? I feel that I would bring a number of qualities to the position. First, I am competent in the issues of transportation planning and how the transportation system interrelates to land use. I am well educated on funding of transportation projects, and am aware of many of the on- going projects in the City and where priorities are in improving the City's bicycle system. I work well with groups and appreciate and respect the views of others. And lastly, I believe I bring a commitment to the subject matter. I ride bikes myself and am enthusiastic about improving SLO's bicycling environment. 5. In your view, what are some of the key bike issues in SLO? Some of the bicycling issues that I see in SLO include the continued progress toward completing the railroad safety trail. The completion of this project would be the equivalent to non-motorized transportation as the interstate highway system is to the car. The convenient and safe connection of a multi-use trail between a large portion of the city and Cal Poly would greatly reduce the use of single occupancy vehicle by Cal Poly students and provide recreational and commuting opportunities to all residents. Other issues that I see include the need for maintenance of critical bikeways (including street sweeping), safety education, encouragement of bicycling, and the closure of key gaps in the class U system. J I Attachment 1 Page 3of 3 6. Is there any additional information about yourself you'd like to share? I am an aspiring SLO homeowner and hope that it would have convenient and safe bicycle access. I look forward to working hard on the committee for the reasons that I described above.
