Through a three-point plan that included`. promotion, proactivity, and empowerment, concerted efforts were made throughout the year to improve mutual respect between student and non-student residents, to communicate about key issues, and create programs aimed at improving the current situation. A variety of issues were brought to the committee's attention for review, comment, or approval. Most meetings were very pleasant and productive, and held high attendance. At the end of summer, an ad floc working subcommittee developed a list of goals for the year(attached) in order to outline what we wanted to achieve. The following is a list summarizing the accomplishments of the year: • Neighborhood Cooperation Week/Make a Difference Day—Co-sponsored by Cal Poly's SCS,this year's Week was a huge success with approximately 500 volunteers at around 60 locations. • SLO Fundraiserfor Afghan Children: Following the events of September 11th, the Neighborhood Relations subcommittee organized a fundraiser for the White House Fund for Afghan Children, and raised approximately $500 dollars through community contributions and Cal Poly student donations. • Good Neighbor Day: After gathering donations from Pacific Home-Do-It Center, Home Depot, and RQN, a group of students and community members came out to fix up the front landscaping of a local residence. • 'Safe Ride: Through concerted efforts by ASI, Ride-On, Cal Poly, SLO PD, and Supervisor Ryan, the Safe Ride program expanded service by adding a second vehicle in order.to enhance public safety and reduce instances of drinking and driving. Updates throughout the year by Ride-On indicated that the extra vehicle was a success. • Town Hall Meeting/Workshop: A discussion session was held to communicate about how student and non-student residents could achieve better relations. A panel was formed including guests from the city and both campuses. There was a mediated question/answer period. A focus group session followed, during which ideas about solutions were created. The event was well received and many felt it was productive. • SCLC Reorganization/Transition: A subcommittee was formed to reevaluate the effectiveness of SCLC both in focus and in structure as well as to improve the rather turbulent transition process. The group's goals (attached) included refreshing the mission statement and by-laws, creating a comprehensive list of position responsibilities, forming a timeline of general activities that SCLC engages in, and creating binders with important information for incoming Chair and Vice Chair. The group completed each of its goals and was pleased with the progress. • Neighborhood Ordinance Package: SCLC did not create, but, after discussing the package for two meetings, endorsed an ordinance package partly dealt with neighborhood enhancement and parking districts. The package was later approved by City Council. • Outreach: Included a presentation to Rotary Club, meetings between RQN and ASI, media coverage of events, and "Communiversity" (Chief Aeilts). • Various Discussions: Poly Voice, Mardi Gras,Alcohol Ordinance, housing, WOW, Open House, Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Culture Fest, Earth Day. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NEXT YEARN For a successful year, it is essential to have an initial understanding of the nature of the sensitive relationships that exist in the community, dynamics of why problems perpetuate, and a notion of what has improved and what can improve. Fundamentally, there must be a commitment to the community by the leadership of SCLC. Aside from what you will discover through your examinations of SLO town and from what great initiatives you will undoubtedly create, here are some recommendations for what will need attention next year: • Housing—Appointment of SCLC members for local housing committees • Additional parking permits zones—These are likely to pop up and the concept should be reevaluated by new SCLC members • Continue discussions with community members- i.e. More town hall meetings, possible student liaison to RQN board, and outreach to community groups • Assessment of Alcohol Ordinance—Continue to track the direct affects of the ordinance and its effectiveness • Night-time bussing—Keep an eye on what plans arise to solve the:public safety problem of no night-time service. This issue was considered an unmet transit need by the County. • Mardi Gras—The debate may very well come up to the surface again. • Increased PR for community: In order to improve perception of community relations in SLO;particularly for student residents,to overshadow negative publicity . • More campus collaboration—Improvement in relations between ASI and ASCC as well as in SCLC programs would be helpful for all. • Student on City Council—A student will be running for City Council in November, so be prepared for those discussions. • Revival of SCLC Awards program(see description in binder) • New Police Chief-Chief Gardiner is retiring and there will be a new Chief ofPolice for SLO. • Web links—You may want to consider creating a comprehensive web site with links back and forth with each SCLC entity Student-Community Liaison Committee Cal Poly • City of San Luis Obispo • Cuesta Chair Position Responsibilities and Expectations • Shall be the President of ASI at Cal Poly(or designee) • Shall run the SCLC meetings and work with subcommittee chairs • .Shall provide an agenda and minutes for each meeting • Appoint subcommittee chairs in conjunction with Vice Chair • Shall be primarily responsible for goal establishment at beginning of year • Shall maintain communication between community entities and SCLC members • Shall ensure advisory recommendations and reports are relayed to appropriate sources • Shall perform a mid-year status update/review to SCLC • Shall provide an end of the year annual report • Shall ensure that SCLC Activities Calendar expectations are accomplished • Shall transition and train new chair Student-Community Liaison Committee Cal Poly • City of San Luis Obispo • Cuesta Vice Chair Position Responsibilities and Expectations • Shall be the Vice President of ASCC (or designee) • Shall assume the responsibility for Chair-in.his/her absence • Shall maintain communication and perform support functions with Chair • Shall work with committee chairs to accomplish objectives o Shall keep oversight over all financial activities and funding for programs • Shall coordinate media and publicity • Shall plan transition and kick-off meetings
