Re: Highway One Ad Hoc Barrier Design Committee
Our committee held its sixth meeting at the Caltrans Laurel Lane offices on Thursday,
July 15`x.
Progress is being made albeit slowly. Caltrans staff provided more information based on
requests raised at our last meeting. Specifically,we were shown illustrations of crash
energy absorbing devices that Caltrans requires on each side of any opening in a traffic
division barrier,None are attractive!!! Picture the often-seen yellow barrels as the worst
of the bad. Safety rales and if a new device is suggested, the time period for testing is
measured in years;it is obvious that we will have to accept what has already been safety
tested
We also were introduced to a clever mechanical device that permits a design motif to be
imprinted(engraved)into both sides of the concrete barrier as it is being extruded in
place. The committee considered several varieties of designs with the majority favoring a
stone motif—a stone reflective of what is found in SLO,probably field stone. The
concrete can be colored and after it is in place it can be stained to obtain a great variety of
tones to further simulate natural stone. How to handle the top remains a bit of a puzzle:
The committee did preliminarily discuss fiuther treatment of the highway as it ends
(begins)near the CDF station. The representative from Morro Bay Beautifal made an
interesting observation and that had to do with expanding the committee's thhddng about
"entrances." Most everyone was thhddng of the end of the barrier as being the entrance
to SLO;his view(which I agree with)was that this"ending"was also the beginning—or
introduction—to Scenic Highway One,perhaps shortly to be recognized as an All
American scenic highway.
