SUBJECT: CITY CO-SPONSORSHIP OF CENTRAL COAST GREENBUILD 2004
CONFERENCE &EXPO
CAO RECOMMENDATION
Approve City co-sponsorship of the Central Coast Greenbuild 2004 Conference & Expo and in-
kind Information Technology assistance.
DISCUSSION
Mountainbrook Community Church, along with other sponsors, is hosting the Central Coast
Greenbuild 2004 Conference & Expo March 3 and 4; 2004, at the Embassy Suites in San Luis
Obispo. The purpose of the conference is to provide information to attendees on "green" building
and design, sustainable construction practices and selection of "green" material for health and
improved indoor air quality. Nationally recognized presenters will provide workshops on the LEED
principles (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and discuss local LEED Registered
Projects, such as the Congregation Beth David Synagogue Project;.Mountainbrook Church Campus,
Phase I; and the SLO Botanical Gardens Education Center.
Mountainbrook Community Church has requested that the City become one of the co-sponsors of
the event. Under the City's Co-Sponsorship policy, the City may provide support for special events
and activities that benefit or are of interest to the community. However, if the City is listed as a co-
sponsor in promoting the event, Council approval is required.
In addition to using the City's name in promotional information, Mountainbrook Community
Church has asked the City to provide three cyber stations in the lobby of the Embassy Suites so
attendees can check their web-based e-mail during the 2-day event. The Information Technology
staff has reviewed this request, and is comfortable providing the in-kind assistance necessary to
install and remove the three workstations and make internet access available on them. However,we
are not recommending that the City absorb the actual payment of the Embassy Suites' internet
access cost. We have discussed this recommendation with one of the conference directors from
Mountainbrook Community Church, and she is comfortable that she will be able to obtain financial
support for the access costs from other sources.
Along with the City possibly being one of the event co-sponsors, the Community Development
Director has agreed to participate in one of the conference panel discussions.

FISCAL IMPACT
The value of the proposed in-kind service is anticipated to be approximately $260. The requested
computers are already available in the City's inventory, and it will take approximately four hours of
Information Technology staff time to set up and take down the workstations.
