While your actions may be legal, I question the ethics of such blatant disregard for the voices of so many of your constituents. I wonder how this development will affect our downtown businesses. However, if we do move forward this project, I do believe that we can be influential in making "big box" stores more responsive to the environmental and social needs of the communities in which they do business. If Target or another corporate retail center is given permission to build, let's use it as an opportunity to raise environmental and social responsibility in the corporate world. First, the store should be required to build an environmentally sustainable structure. This means: 1. Use recycled building materials. 2. Energy sources must be off the grid<solar panels or other renewable resource. 3. Gray water would be used for landscaping and non-drinkable plumbing. Second, the store should not be a blight to the community's aesthetic character. This means: 1. Underground parking. 2. A drought tolerant landscape which also serves as a walking/biking/play area. Third, the store should designate space for locally and socially responsibly produced goods. This compromise could be a win-win situation. Although construction costs will initially be high, a large corporation can afford to begin the process and drive down the costs of sustainable construction for smaller businesses and residences. Local construction companies would win. The retail store could use the pilot project in an advertising campaign to boost a "green" image. Shoppers would be happy. People would have more green space. Of course, the downtown merchants would still struggle to compete... The Dalidio/Marketplace project could be an opportunity for ground-breaking file://C:\Documents%20and%20Settings\slouser\Local%20Settings\Temp\GW}000O1.HTM 8/23/2004 Page 2 of 2 -r dialogue. Who knows? The action we take today may improve life for people in concrete jungles like Los Angeles. The private sector can contribute to quality of life with green space, a socially responsible market place, and sustainable construction. Sincerely, Elizabeth Aebischer file://C:\Documents%20and%2OSettings\slouser\Local%2OSettings\Temp\GW}000O1.HTM 8/23/2004 CD CD CD 00 00 N N SCD _ C CD CL CD CD CD CD CD o a CD 0 CD CDCD CD o o o 0 P7" o a 0 CL CD o o C7 a It p- r+ CD ; O o a oCD ce CD a ° CD o - CD ¢. d cro CD Cr CD ~ o b CD cr CD uq CD ' C• CD CD CD '. a CD INV 0 CDC/ b n CIQCD ewe eye eye . . •• , O . ►+, O CD Zvi r .
