SUBJECT: SISTER CITY PROGRAM
We have received a letter from Jonni Eylar, SLO County Visitors & Conference Bureau,
regarding a possible sister city program with Maebaru, Tokyo (attached). If Council wishes
to explore this issue, it should be referred to staff for a Council agenda report.

We have recently been notified that a particular city in Japan would like to establish a sister-
city program with one of our cities In San Luis Obispo County. The city, Maebaru, is located
1200 km west of Tokyo in the western suburbs of Fukuoka City. It has a history spanning
two thousand years, has a population of 51,000, and It's main Industry Is agriculture.
The city of Maebaru Is facing a new age to develop local politics to an international level.
"Maebaru believes it's necessary for it's future to take positive action; to Invite youth from
foreign countries; to promote mutual exchange of education and culture through students; to
share and enjoy civilian lifestyles and environments; to promote mutual exchange of industry
and economy; to send local government officials overseas; to develop a sister-city
relationship.'
A sister-city program is an official commitment and requires the approval of the governing
body. If you are interested in pursuing this program with Maebaru or in general, please
contact me as soon as possible at 541-8000.
