COUNCIL A E3YOA SRT 7
David Romero, c Works Director
F SUBJECT: Temporary Storage Container at the
Children's Museum
CAO RECOMMENDATION:
By motion, receive and file
BACKGROUND:
At its meeting of October 17, 1989, the Council approved the
purchase and installation of storage containers at the Children's
Museum, the Sinsheimer ballfield, and at the Corp Yard
(Item C-4) . These containers will replace the storage needs now
provided by the transmission shop at 1010 Nipomo Street. Verbal.
Council direction to staff was for staff to prepare schematic
sketches of the facilities proposed at the Children's Museum and
to distribute the sketches to City Council members.
At its meeting of January 2, 1990, the Council approved the
,agreement with the Children's Museum for use of the property at
1010 Nipomo Street (Item C-4) . At that time, "the Council
directed staff to prepare an agendized consent item regarding the
temporary storage facilities. This report responds to that
request.
DISCUSSION:
Bids on storage containers were received and a purchase order is
processing through the administrative process. On January 9,
1990, staff .received corrected ARC approval for the containers
(Exhibit A) . Note that the condition at 1010 Nipomo Street was
that the container match the exterior treatment of the Children's
Museum.
Staff has been working closely with Rob Strong, of the Children's
Museum, who has provided us with schematic sketches of the
general concept he has envisioned for the site (Exhibit. B) .
Briefly, the container would be placed against the north side of
the transmission shop building, with a roll up service door
opening to Monterey Street and a second door opening into the
gravel demonstration area. The container would be painted to
resemble a railroad box car, a joint venture between the
Children's Museum and the City.
The container is to be installed prior to February 1, 1990 so as
to permit +removal of stored materials from the transmission shop.,
thus allmAng the Children's Museum to take over its lease on
that date.
