Romero Lane WilsPrepared by: Jack Brazeal` Public Works Dir. Parks & M r. CitY t SUBJECT: Heritage Trees CAO RECOMMENDATION: Adopt Resolution adding Heritage Trees BACKGROUND: The Heritage. Tree Program idea has been included in the Tree Ordinance since 1971 . For many years, there was minimal interest in the program. In 1984 , the Tree Committee decided that this was a worthwhile program and that it should be activated. In April 1985 , after review of the existing Heritage Trees, proposed trees and the program literature, the Tree Committee submitted a list of trees for possible dedication as Heritage Trees. Since 1985, the City Council has adopted a total of 17 Heritage. Trees. This proposal includes four additional trees . Criteria for Heritage Tree designation is a tree that has special historical or horticultural interest . The Tree Committee reviews the proposed Heritage Trees for consideration with the following factors in mind: 1 . Condition and state of health of the specimen 2 . Permanence of site location 3 . Visual accessibility HERITAGE TREES PROPOSED The Tree Committee and staff has identified, reviewed and approved for Council consideration the following new trees: 1 . Evergreen Ash (Fraxinus uhdei) , 1400 Osos Street 2. Olives ( 2) (Olea europaea) , 1839 Conejo Avenue 3. Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) , 941 Chorro Street 4. California Bay (Umbellularia californica) , 855 Nipomo Street CITIZEN INPUT The property owners have agreed with the Heritage Tree Program guidelines and approved the dedication of their trees as San Luis Obispo Heritage Trees. LST� city Of Sat, LUIS OBISp0 COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT Heritage Tree Page 2 REQUEST The Tree Committee and staff would like the adoption of the Heritage Trees prior to the San Luis Obispo Arbor Day ceremonies slated for March 10, 1990. Arbor Day ceremonies are being planned which will include the presentation of Heritage Tree plaques to the City and property owners. The Tree Committee and staff invites the Council to participate in the Arbor Day activities. FISCAL IMPACT Funds were approved in the 1990-91 budget in the amount of $2 ,000. Staff time used on this aspect of the tree program is minimal and is included within budget submittals. ALTERNATIVES 1 . Adopt resolution designating trees proposed as Heritage Trees (staff recommendation) 2 . Adopt with modifications 3 . Do not adopt heritage.wp/arborday RESOLUTION—NO .
