RELEASE
Community Partners in Child Care is sponsoring a staff training workshop for providers
of school age child care on Saturday, October 13 at Pacheco Elementary School, from
8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and the cost is $5.00.
Staff from city recreation departments, the YMCA, PTA providers and child care centers
are eligible to attend. Participants are eligible to receive .5 unit of continuing education
from Cuesta College for an extra charge of $2.50. This college credit may be applied to
the educational requirements of staff for state licensing of child care facilities.
Topics presented at the workshop will include the developmental stages and needs of
children from 5 to 12, curriculum and planning, child abuse, art activities for different
ages, outdoor and indoor energy users, and positive techniques for handling behavior
problems. In addition, handouts will be available describing nutritional needs of school
age children and giving examples of easy, inexpensive, and nutritious snacks.
Currently there are 34 sites providing care for school age children around the county,
not including private schools or home day care. The capacity of these programs is
about 1,200. As more of these programs become licensed and their quality improves,
they are becoming an increasingly important component in the structure of families with
working parents and school age children. The Needs Assessment Report from
Community Partners in Child Care estimates that there are approximately 7,500 children
in the county between the ages of 5 and 12 using or needing care. If the population of
the county grows at all in the next 10 years as expected, these numbers can only go up.
The need for qualified providers will be with us for some time to come.
