MINUTES
Parks and Recreation Administrative Office
Wednesday, April 10, 2002 7:00 p.m.
CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson Ron Batterson called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Chair Ron Batterson, Commissioners Wes Conner, Penny Rappa, Martha
Schwartz, John Tischler, and Bill Pyper
STAFF: Rich Ogden and Heather Freebairn
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD:
There was no public comment.
CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORT:
The minutes of the March 13, 2002 meeting were approved with the following amendments:
Item #2-Should read, “assist with the event”.
Item #5-Should read, “Conner has requested the floodgate boards to be located and that
signage be posted as to where they can be found”.
The financial report of April 2002, was accepted as presented with the following amendments:
Release Red Cross donation collected in the name of the Jack House Committee.
Item # 1: Election of Officers
On a motion by Schwartz, seconded by Conner, the Committee voted 6:0 for Ron Batterson to
continue as Chair of the Jack House Committee, and to accept Wes Conner as Vice Chair.
Items #2: Decoration Policy
Conner led discussion as to adopting a Decoration Policy for the Jack House. Batterson, Tischler, and
Conner will draft a Decoration Policy for the Jack House.
Item #3: Update on Art in the Garden
Committee reviewed memo from Kim Walker, Parks and Recreation Public Information Officer, who
made two requests: (1) to find another Committee Member to assist Martha Schwartz, (2) to give each
Committee Member a job of the day.
Gerry Johnson will assist Martha Schwartz.
Committee Members volunteered to assist with the following jobs:
Conner/Batterson Traffic
Pyper, Tischler Loading/Unloading
Schwartz Docent Recruiter
Rodman Tickets
Tischler Setup/Take Down
Item #4: Further update on Docent Survey
After discussing various options the Jack House Committee requested that Schwartz take back to the
Docents the following counter proposal: The Jack House be opened for tours every Sunday from
1-4pm and during Day Light Saving Time (between the months of April-October) and the Jack House

is open for Friday evening tours. It was also requested that any proposal that is finally adopted by the
Committee is given a five-year commitment.
Item#5: Reports and Updates
Larry Tolson sent an e-mail to Ogden on current Jack House activity.
Kitchen flooring is scheduled for installation Monday, April 29, 2002. The new floor needs to
be stripped and waxed, (Tuesday) and allowed to sit undisturbed for 24 hours per manufacturer
instructions. No activity should take place on new floor until Thursday, May 2, 2002.
Shade Structure: The Botanical Garden Club expressed a desire to share the purchase of the
large sunshade with Historical Society. Botanical Garden Club offered $100.00 toward the
purchase of the shade and stated the Historical Society would pay the same amount. Tolson
will proceed with the selling of the sunshade as the Committee directs.
On a motion by Rappa, seconded by Connor, the Commission voted 6:0 to donate the large sunshade
to the Botanical Gardens.
Docent update:
Invitations were sent to the Jack House Committee to invite members to attend the April
Docent Meeting.
Historical Museum is donating Victorian clothing that may be used for special events.
Doormats are needed for foot traffic in main entrance and exit doors.
Fountain in garden needs to be cleaned.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:45 to the May 8, 2002 regular meeting at 7:00 pm.
