MINUTES
Parks and Recreation Administrative Office
Wednesday, January 12, 200 5:30 PM
CALL TO ORDER: Chair Ron Batterson called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Vice Chair Wes Conner, Committee Members Bill Pyper, Marion Rodman, Gerry
Johnson and John Tishler
STAFF: Rich Ogden, Kim Walker, Jane Schneider and Larry Tolson.
GUESTS: Richard Dresp and Betty Stockton
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD:
There was no public comment.
CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORT:
The minutes of November 2004 meeting were approved.
The minutes of December 2004 meeting were approved with the following correction:
John Tishler was present for the meeting.
The Financial Report for November 2004 was presented and accepted.
The Financial Report for December 2004 was presented and accepted.
ITEM #1: Discuss Jack House Brochures
Kim Walker did not have any new information at meeting time about the brochures. She
will have Vendor, Shirley Howell, mock up a sample brochure for the February Jack
House Committee meeting.
ITEM #2: Open House Wrap Up
The 2 nights were very successful and is recommended again for next year.
The committee may want to reconsider calling the event “Candle Light Tour” since
candle light is not permitted in the Jack House due to fire regulations.
A request was made to frame the 2004 winter poster.
Docents will decide how and when Poinsettias will be distributed for 2005.
Light for inside the Jack House will need to be improved for 2005. Some rooms are
very dark and do not have appropriate electrical outlets.
ITEM #3: Discuss Victorian Game Day
Boomer Specialist, June Schneider, proposed a Victorian Game Day for June 26, 2005
at the Jack House Gardens from Noon – 4.00 pm. This would be a family event open to
the public.
This event could be used by the Docents to dedicate the Martha Schwartz memorial.
A motion was made to support the idea of a Victorian Game Day and to have
staff submit a proposed budget at the February 2005 meeting. The motion was
passed unanimously.

Reports and Updates
Monthly Activities
o Tolson suggested making a outside lighted walkway a priority for 2005.
o Tolson reported the large Magnolia tree has bee removed. The remaining stump will be
removed as soon as possible.
o The Jack House foundation project and heating project will be deferred to the 2006-07
budget.
o Tolson reported that the fire sprinkler system for the Gift and Service Building will be
proposed as a line item for the City Maintenance Budget.
o Walker distributed the 2005 Parks and Recreation Key. The Key was distributed to City
residents through The Tribune or by direct mail.
o Ogden reported on an annual donation of $500 received from a Jack House family
member. The donor requested the money be used for the rose garden.
Docent Activities
Dresp reported the following:
o The SLO Symphony was given a private tour of the Jack House.
o The screen door in the back is ripped and needs to be repaired.
o During the recent rains, water ran into the gift shop under the door.
o February 5, 2005 at 2.00 pm will be Docent recruitment. A request was made for
a paid advertisement in The Ticket.
Member Comments
o Tishler requested the topic of the elevator be placed on the February agenda.
o Connor reminded committee members of the RSVP date for the Ken Schwartz dinner.
o Connor asked when new committee members would be recruited. The City was placing
a recruitment ad for all committees in the paper for the following weekend.
o Connor stated the drainage problem on the path has not done any visible damage, but
the issue should be looked into soon.
o Connor requested the committee make a decision soon about the type of memorial they
want to do for Martha Schwartz.
o Rodman is clipping all articles about the Jack House & Gardens and needs an archive
storage box.
o Batterson stated the following items will be place on the February agenda: Elevator,
Trout About Town, Jack House Brochure, Victorian Games and Budget.
o Batterson requested that staff change the banner for the Jack House so that the words
“Jack House” are in a bigger and bolder font.
o Batterson stated that there are a few pickets on the front fence that need to be replaced.
Communications
No communications were presented.
Meeting adjourned at 6:55 p.m. to the February 9th meeting at 5:30 pm at the Parks and
Recreation Department.
