Jack House Committee
MINUTES
Parks and Recreation Administrative Office
Wednesday, January 11, 2006 5:30 PM
CALL TO ORDER: Chair Ron Batterson called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Vice Chair Wes Conner, Committee Members Bill Pyper, John Tischler, Gerry
Johnson and Patrick Mayeda.
GUESTS: Jackie Kane
STAFF: Rich Ogden and Larry Tolson.
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD:
There was no public comment.
CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORT:
The notes of November 2005 meeting were reviewed.
The Financial Report for December 2005 was presented and accepted.
ITEM #1: Garden Improvements
Larry Tolson collected bids for the garden wall. There was a low bid of $6,684, a
$12,000 bid and a high bid of $14,000+.
o A motion was made to authorize up to $8,000 to be used on the construction for
the garden improvements projects. The construction project is to be awarded to
CML Construction. The motion passed unanimously.
Funds from the Kay Kaetzel donation are to be dedicated to the Garden Improvement
project and for the Martha Schwartz memorial project.
Reports and Updates
Monthly Activities – Staff & Public Works
o Tolson presented information for a possible gutter for the gift shop roof. To place a
gutter on the roof in the front of the gift shop will cost $300 to place a gutter on all
four sides will cost $750. The rain gutter should help keep some of the water run off
from leaking under the gift shop door.
o The electrical work was completed at a cost of $2,809. Three circuits were put in and
two of them were tied together.
o All cuttings used as decorations in the Jack House will need to be sprayed with a fire
retardant spray. This includes holiday trees and cuttings.
o The cost of the holiday Poinsettias from Cal Poly was $160.
o The fire sprinkler project should be out to bid in 2006. The project should be
completed by the summer of 2006.
o Helicoil testing has been completed at the Jack House. A proposed project will most
likely be placed in the 2007-09 City budget.
o Ogden passed out and reviewed the 2006 Jack House calendar of events ~ minor
changes were made.

o Ogden reported Art in the Garden will take place August 20th, from 12:00 – 5:00 pm.
o There will be a cleaning of the Jack House by Service Master on January 13, 2006.
Docent Activities
Kane reported the following:
-Need a shelf painted white.
-Nanny’s room and Butler pantry have broken shades.
-There are currently 12 docents available but need at least 24 with current
schedule of events.
-Ken Schwartz sent a letter to the Jack House Committee and Docents
authorizing the use of his water color on cards for sale at the gift shop.
-The Jack House Committee may want to consider closing the Jack House for
the months of January, February and March of every year. It would be a nice
break for the Docents during the slow winter season.
-An idea for a possible Halloween activity may want to be considered for
2006.
Member Comments
o Committee Member Mayeda requested the Jack House Committee temporarily move
the meeting time from 5:30 pm to 5:00 pm for the February and March meetings.
o Batterson has requested a new and updated copy of the committee roster be provided
with Kim Walkers information to be included.
o Conner reported that five historic trees have been lost. There is a chance that a
replacement tree may not be found for the front tree.
o Batterson announced the Advisory Appreciation Dinner will be held on March 16,
2006.
Communications
No communications were presented.
Meeting adjourned at 6:53 p.m. to the February 8, 2006 meeting at 5:00 pm at the Parks
and Recreation Administration Office.
