Jack House Committee
MINUTES
Parks and Recreation Administrative Office
Wednesday, April 12, 2006 5:30 PM
CALL TO ORDER: Chair Ron Batterson called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Vice Chair Wes Conner, Committee Members Bill Pyper, John Tischler, Gerry Johnson
and Patrick Mayeda.
GUESTS: Marilyn Forselles
STAFF: Kim Walker and Larry Tolson
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD:
There was no public comment.
CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORT:
The minutes of March 2005 meeting were accepted with three corrections:
Item #1 – work on Garden Improvements including the installation of the bird bath.
Docent Activities – The Manse on Marsh.
Member Comments – Conner would like to get Recreation Students involved with Docent
recruitment.
The Financial Report for March 2006 was presented and accepted.
ITEM #1: Elections
Ron Batterson was appointed Chair
Jerry Johnson was appointed Vice Chair
ITEM #2: Installation of John Tischler
Committee member, John Tischler, took the oath of office.
Reports and Updates
Monthly Activities – Staff & Public Works
o Tolson reported on the following
The skirts of the Redwood trees need to be lifted a little.
The contractor will be completing the Garden Improvement Projects in between
the rainy days.
o Walker reported on the following
Betsey Kaiser was hired as the new Parks & Recreation Director.
Mothers Day in the Garden is scheduled and KSBY may do a spot on the
morning news. Also, promotional flyers are going out in SLO Flyers.
Victorian Games Day is tentatively scheduled for June 25, 2006 and will be
considered at a future Jack House Committee meeting.
Art in the Garden is scheduled for August 20, 2006. A call to artists will be
going out soon. The SLO Art Gallery would like to have their logo placed on the
post cards that go out to the artists.

Art in the Garden: the percentage paid to the Jack House from the sale of art will
need to be decided at the May 2006 meeting.
The payment for the new Jack House brochures was taken from the Jack House
account, not the Promotional Funds.
Docent Activities
Forselles reported the following:
- Committee may want to consider using scripted initials instead of photos or
painted pictures on the outside of window shades.
- Docents are not happy with the cleaning service being used ~ some areas are
not being cleaned properly.
- Docents would like to dedicate the Bird Bath on Mothers Day.
- The PowerPoint presentation needs updating so that the Docents may use it as
a recruitment tool.
- Docents requested reviewing the current entrance fee ~ possibly raising the fee
from $2.00 to $5.00.
- Look into possibility of publicizing the Jack House with freeway signs
indicating the location of a Nationally Registered Historical Site.
- Docents need incident forms available at the house.
- Docents would like a laminated emergency phone list placed by the phone at
the Jack House.
- Docents would like the Buggy House open and made available as a part of the
display space.
Member Comments
o Conner would like to discuss possible art work for the window shades & to possibly have
it completed before Art in the Garden.
o Conner requested the dead Holly by the Carriage Barn be removed from the Garden, but
keeping the stump so that new spouts may grow from the cut stump.
o Tischler proposed a work party for May 2006.
o Mayeda reported the new gutter system on the Gift Shop does not look straight.
Communications
No communications were presented.

Recreation Administration Office.
