CALL TO ORDER: Chair Ron Batterson called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM

REGULAR ITEMS
1. Donated Items from Ann Green (Ron Batterson)
Chair Ron Batterson explained that this topic was brought up last month when Bryant presented
the items but mentioned that there was not a motion or vote on it. Chair Ron Batterson asked the
group if this was something they would like to vote on. Toni Kincaid mentioned that the items
donated would need the attached paperwork signed in order to accept the items. Chair Ron
Batterson noted that the paperwork was not attached with the items. Toni Kincaid stated that she
will check with Bryant in regards to the paperwork. Toni Kincaid stated that in the past the group
has voted in regards to donated items. Chair Ron Batterson moved to accept the donated items.

2. Public Works Update (Public Works Staff)
Chair Ron Batterson mentioned that this item is no longer relevant.
Staff Member Dave Setterlund spoke clarifying that the advertising for the construction projects
will go out in November.
Chair Ron Batterson stated that this item was just a carry-over from the previous meeting and
that is why it is on the agenda.
3. Parks and Recreation Update (Dave Setterlund)
Staff Member Dave Setterlund spoke of the Recreations Departments’ upcoming events
including the Munchkin March at Meadow Park on October 25. Staff Member Dave Setterlund
noted the success of the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner held the night before. Staff Member
Dave Setterlund informed the group that the pool renovation is right on schedule and will open
back up on October 22.
Toni Kincaid clarified the date of the Munchkin March of October 25. Chair Ron Batterson
asked for further details on the event. Staff Member Dave Setterlund elaborated on the event
mentioning that it is the fifth year of the event. Staff Member Dave Setterlund spoke of the
partnership with the Mindful Mothers group. Staff Member Dave Setterlund explained the
fundraising portion of the event for the San Luis Obispo Food Bank Coalition. Staff Member
Dave Setterlund described the event including food vendors, live music, children in costume, a
gymnastics fun zone, and outdoor movie showing, and the promotion of healthy living and a
healthy lifestyle.
4. Docent Activities for August/September (Toni Kincaid)
Toni Kincaid noted that numbers have been really low this summer for Jack House tours. Toni
Kincaid mentioned that in August they had one tour and last weekend they had one tour. Toni
Kincaid stated that she does not know what to do to increase this, mentioning that the sign is out
in front to try to draw attraction.
Chair Ron Batterson stated that the group is moving in to some big events and asked Toni to fill
the group in on what was coming up on the thirteenth of the month.
Toni Kincaid explained that the Central Coast Rail Road Festival and begins on Thursday
October 10 and runs until Sunday October 13. On Saturday Marilyn Darnell will be speaking at
2:00 about the San Luis Obispo Founding Fathers and their efforts to bring the South Pacific Rail
Road into Town. Toni Kincaid mentioned that on Sunday they will have tours at the house
relating to Jack and his Rail Road efforts.
Gerry Johnson clarified that Marilyn Darnell will be doing her talk at the Rail Road Museum.
Toni Kincaid noted that the SLO Journal had a nice article on the Jack house as well as another
article on the rail road in which Mr. Jack was mentioned.

Toni Kincaid shared the details of an event through the History Museum called SLO Souls in
which people dress in time appropriate attire at the Cemetery at Higuera and Elk and are
stationed at different graves speaking about the founding people of San Luis Obispo. Toni
Kincaid stated that Marilyn Darnell and Bryant Williams will be there as Mr. and Mrs. Jack.
Toni Kincaid explained that this event will be on November 2.
Toni Kincaid spoke stating that there are three different groups from the high school will help
decorate for the Haunted Jack House on Sunday the 13th at 4:00 pm.
Chair Ron Batterson clarified that the following Sunday October 20 will be the first day of the
Haunted Jack House tours. Chair Ron Batterson asked if there was a theme in decorations this
year. Toni Kincaid stated that there is no real theme.
Toni Kincaid continued that November will be the next meeting and the Docent Appreciation
Dinner. Toni Kincaid stated that Marilyn Darnell will attend to speak on her new book.
Toni Kincaid mentioned that Marilyn Darnell had been contacted by the Hearst Ranch to come
out and take photographs of the Ranch. Toni Kincaid stated she asked Marilyn if she could see
about getting a group of Docents out to the Ranch as well.
Chair Ron Batterson clarified that the meeting on November 13 will be at 4:00 pm and the
Docent Appreciation Dinner at 5:30 pm.
Staff Member Dave Setterlund mentioned that the invitations for the Docent Appreciation Dinner
are complete and confirmed that they should be mailed out. Staff Member Dave Setterlund
confirmed that the Haunted Jack House banner will be hung up on Monday October 14 and stay
up for 2 weeks.
5. Member Comments/Communications (Ron Batterson)
Gerry Johnson commented that after her most current stint of 12 years as a Jack House
Committee Member, next month will be her last meeting. Gerry Johnson mentioned that she tried
to fill her place with a member of the Historical Society but the person declined.
Chair Ron Batterson questioned if Gerry has notified the Clerk’s Office and so they can arrange
interviews for a new member.
Marcia Nelson suggested the idea of having “Jack House Greeters” dressed in time appropriate
garb standing outside the Jack House on Sundays to draw more attention to the tours. Committee
mentioned to bring this up to the Docents.
Marcia Nelson suggested having a specific Jack House flyer at the Chamber of Commerce.
Bob Gordon suggested Good Morning San Luis Obispo as a good source of advertisement. Bob
Gordon also mentioned bringing back a type of Town Crier in costume walking people from
Down Town to the Jack House.

Chair Ron Batterson mentioned that the Jack House Greeters could act as Town Criers. Chair
Ron Batterson also suggested adding a cross walk in front of the Jack House to increase safety in
crossing the street in that area. Toni Kincaid spoke on the possibility of teaming with The Manse
on getting a cross walk installed.
Meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m. Next meeting is November 13, 2013 at 4:00 pm at the San Luis
Obispo Parks and Recreation Administration Office.
