SUBJECT: SAFE HOUSE PROGRAM
RECOMMENDATION
Approve Fire Stations as designated "Safe House" locations where a child may go for safety or
assistance when the child encounters a threat or other emergency.
DISCUSSION
Background
The Safe House Program was implemented in Los Angeles County in 1997. The program provides
a temporary safe haven for any child facing a potentially threatening situation and needs a safe
place to go.
Process
Fire Department personnel will provide assistance to a child by temporarily placing a Fire
Department resource out of service while providing assistance, telephoning appropriate authorities
for help, reassuring a frightened, lost or endangered child, assisting a child who is having a medical
emergency, or who is in immediate danger of becoming a victim of any crime, intimidation or
abuse. Safe House placards will be placed in a conspicuous place at all four Fire Stations.
If needed, Fire Department personnel will complete required reports with law enforcement or other
agencies.
CONCURRENCES
The Police Department concurs with this program.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no additional funding needed for the Fire Department to operate the program. Existing staff
of the Fire Department will be assigned to the program.
ALTERNATIVES
Do not approve the four Fire Stations as a designated location, or only approve Fire Station 1
