C
Councilman 'W. H. Brazil was instructed by the Mayor to make a survey 81
for street signs.as to the number required and the cost involved and to retort back
to the Council.
The City nttorney asked for a leave of absence for six weeks beginning
Mav -nth and on motion of Ralph C. Kennedy, seconded by R. P. Howell the rdquest was
granted. Judge Harris to act as legal advisor during his absence.
On motion of Ralph C. Kennedy, seconded by W. H. Brazil the meeting
ad,iourned.

Communication from the League for Local Liuor C -Introl of San Francisco, under
date of May 3, 1941 was read and on motion of ?Al. IN. Brazil, seconded by R.P. Ho•jell, it
was ordered filed.
Letter from the California I,4unicipal Utilities :.ssociation of Roseville, Calif.
under date of March 20, 1941, asking cooperation in compiling information about muni-
cipally ovined utilities -:%,Fs read to the Council and on motion of Ralph C. Kennedy, seconde
by R. P. Howell, it was ordered that the letter be referred to the M -nyor for reply.
Communication from the Construction & Building Laborers' Union of the A. F.
of L., Local 1464, San Luis Obispo, under date of May 5, 1941 relat`ve to wage scale on a
orocosed project that the city is undertaking, was read to the Council.and on motion of
Fd. H. Brazil, seconded by Ralph C. Kennedy the matter was referred to.the Commissioner of
Public '�Iorks, with pov)er to act.
Communication from Dean Van Maren, 2205 Johnson Ave. tinder date of May 52 19411
requesting s continuation of sewer line up Johnson' Ave. tc a point 109 ft. north for the
purpose of serving a new house under construction and an offer of a piece of land of 50 ft
wide to be used as a city street via's read to the Council and on motion of Ralph C. Kennedy
seconded by W. H. Brazil, was referred to the Commissioner of Public 'rdorks, for investi-
gation' and report.
Claims against the city for the month of April were ordered paid, subject to
the approval of the heads of the respective departmente and the Mayor.
Mr. Bennie Bettencourt appeared before the Council co,pl -ining about the
noise in his neighborhood caused by the Butane Concern near his home. The Council assured
him the Police Dept. � -)ould look into the matter.
Rev. James Matthew Alley appeared before the Council to thank the Council and the
Police Department for the work done toward improving the streets and the safety campaign
in placing of Stop Signs :,;here needed.
Resolution No. 572 (PTew Series) - A Resolution authorizing the Mayor and City
Clerk to execute an application, jointly with the United States of America, to the
Division of ''dater Resources of the State of California for the appropriation of water
from the Salinas River was introduced and adopted on motion of It% H.Brazil, seconded by
R. P. Howell by the following vote:

On motion of W. H. Brazil, seconded by Ralph C. 'eanedy the application of
Johnny Malloy for Mdse ( Confectionery, Lunch, Soft Drinks, etc. ) at 818 Palm St. was
denied, as was also the transfer of license from T. Nakamura to Mrs. Mae Levy of the
Pacific Hotel.
On motion of R. P. Hoi"jell, seconded by W. H. Brazil the following application:

The proposed agreement bets ^jeen the Goldtree Investment Co. and the amity of
San Luis Obispo was presented by the City Attorney and it was ordered the agreement be
amended and sent to Mr. Goldtree for his signature.
John E. Martin was appointed a regular member of the San Luis Obispo Fire
Department as of May 1st, 1941 at a salary of $125.00 per month, one -half of his salary
to be paid by the Water Dept. and all automatic raises to be paid by the Public Health
and Safety Fund, ( Fire Dept.)
Councilman Joseph Leary wos instructed by the Mayor to look into the purchase
and secure prices on a small safe for Judge Harris ( Police Court Office).
Commissioner W. H. Brazil presented prices on street markers at this time as
follows:
