Mayor Tim O'Reilly at a city coun.

The mayor was referring to an
announcement by Councilman

substandard concrete work being
put in by some home builders in
the city.

City Engineer Homer Hamlin
told the council that there had been
a 75 per cent improvement in con-

weeks, due to more rigid city law
spections.
Replacement Care
• COUIICilznzd Carpenter also an.
nbunced a decision to require con-
tractors and utility, companies
tearing up street paving to use
more care in replacing the surfac-
ing when their work is finished. I
"Carelessness in this respect is
responsible for much of the rough-
ness on our city streets, he stated.,
"You can drive along almost any
street in town and see the depres-
sions where the paving has sunk
following sewer, gas or water con-
nections."
It has been the policy of the city
to repave the broken surface, but
contractors and utility employes
have often failed to carry out their-
responsibility to adequately tamp
the dirt they fill back into trenches
and holes under the street, it was
stated. Pr
