The City Council and the Administrative staff of Cal Poly met to discuss general
problems facing both the college and the City of .San Luis Obispo.
Mr. Kennedy, President of Cal Poly, presented enrollment projections for Cal Poly
as seen by the State Board of Trustees for the next ten years. He stated that
the larger enrollment of students would cause great impact on housing not only
for the students but also for the citizens of the community. He explained that
there were some plans for future development of single- dormitory housing on the
campus but no provisions had been discussed for married students.
Mr: Gerard, Esecutive Dean of Cal Poly, presented the proposed development of
six hundred (600) family units on college -owned property adjacent to Highway 1.
He stated that of the 600 units, 100 would be used for new faculty who were un-
able to find housing in the community and would give them some place to live
while they were seek.ing their own housing. The balance would be for married
students with families. He continued that this development was to be built by
private capital with a long term lease of State property and the proposal re-
quired that all City ordinances be followed in the development. He stated
there were several large firms interested in this proposal who had submitted
plans for the development.
Councilman Miller brought to the group's attention the question of inaugurating
some type of transportation other than automobile between the City and the campus.
One suggestion was the Southern Pacific Railroad right -of -way going through the
City and the campus be used on a lease or other basis for electric cars.
The group then discussed generally the proposed annexation of the Cal Poly campus
to the City reviewing some of the advantages for both the City and the college
and the hope by the college officials that some of the funds attributed to the
college might be spent on improvements of college property for which City or
college funds could not be used such as seating for athletic events, trans-
portation, etc.
The Cal Poly staff and the City Council agreed to meet again in the near future
to continue discussions of mutual problems.
