PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
PRESENTATIONS
P1. The Chamber of Commerce gave a presentation, "Our Vision of San Luis Obispo's
Economic Future."
Chamber President Dave Garth introduced the item.
Pierre Rademaker, Chamber of Commerce Economic Vision Committee Member, reviewed the
economic principles and assumptions used in drafting the report.
Shelly Stanwvck, Chamber Director of Governmental Affairs, presented and defined three
points of the six point economic strategy: 1) nurture and protect existing businesses; 2) use
economic development "secret weapons " —Cal Poly & Cuesta Colleges; and 3) attract
environmentally conscious future oriented companies.
Andrew Merriam, Chairman of the Chamber's Economic Vision Committee, presented the
three remaining points: 4) create a true destination tourism stop; 5) keep SLO as the county's
retail and services hub; and 6) improve infrastructures.
P2. Council considered a presentation by Robert Schiebelhut, Allen Haile and Howard
Gordon, members of Technology R D, on the establishment of a Cal Poly - related research

Robert Schiebelhut gave a presentation on the university- related research park concept and
asked Council to consider adopting a resolution in support of Cal Poly taking a leadership

role in establishing a research park. He explained that Technology R 8 D, a non -profit
organization, can act as a catalyst in this process. He said that a feasibility project has been
negotiated with Bechtel Corporation at a reasonable cost and is under way.
Allen Haile explained that in order to complete the feasibility study, Cal Poly must have the
clear support of the community, and that a resolution passed by the City Council would help
indicate that support.
Council discussed concerns that there would be opportunity for community input and a
suggestion was made that a "Whereas" addressing the issue could be added to the
resolution.
By consensus, Council gave direction to staff to draft a resolution of support.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to come before the City Council, Mayor Settle adjourned the
meeting at 1:00 p.m. to Monday, March 23, 1998 at 11:30 a.m. in the Council Hearing Room,
990 Palm Street, San Luis Obispo.
