AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO ADDING
SECTION 4270 TO MUNICIPAL CODE ARTICLE IV, CHAPTER 2,
REGARDING POSTING OF SIGNS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY AT
DRAINS LEADING TO CREEKS.
BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of San Luis Obispo as follows:
SECTION 1. Municipal Code Article IV, Chapter 2, is hereby amended by
adding Section 4270 to read as follows:
"SECTION 4270. POSTING OF NOTICE REQUIRED AT STORM DRAINS.
For the purpose of implementing Section 374 of the California Penal
Code, each owner of an apartment complex consisting of four (4) or more
units shall be responsible for causing a sign to be posted adjacent to
each storm drain located on the .property which drains directly to a creek.
Said signs shall warn all persons not to litter or dump waste materials in
violation of Penal Code Section 374 b.
(a)- Specifications for signs.
Specifications for signs shall be available from the Community
Development Department.
(b) Wording on signs.
The following inscription shall be placed on the signs:
"PLEASE DON'T POLLUTE THE CREEK. IT'S NOT NICE TO
POLLUTE AND IT'S ILLEGAL.

(c) Placement of signs.
The property owner shall be responsible for placing and maintaining
signs in a conspicious location as close as possible to storm drain inlets.

(d) Stencils on pavement.
In addition to signs at each inlet, the property owner shall be
responsible for placing and maintaining a stenciled message reading,
"NOT FOR OIL" adjacent to each storm drain inlet. "
SECTION 2. This ordinance, together with the ayes and noes, shall be
published once in full, at least three (3) days before its final passage,
in the Telegram- Tribune, a newspaper published and circulated in said City,
and the same shall go into effect at the expiration of thirty (30) days
after its said final passage.
INTRODUCED AND PASSED TO PRINT at a meeting of the City Council on
the 20th day of December , 1977, on motion of Councilman Jorgensen ,
seconded by Councilman Dunin , and on the following roll call vote:
AYES: Councilmen Dunin, Jorgensen, Petterson, Settle and Mayor Schwartz
