The height limits in the city have been suggested for good reasons. I realize that the City wants to encourage development with the promise of generating revenue to support city services and in this case, provide a transit center and parking garage. However, the request to allow almost double the height limit, up to 75', is not necessary to support the above named project. San Luis Obispo relies heavily on tourism to bring prosperity to the area. Some of the draw for tourists is the charm, scale, street trees, the Mission and creek that form the core of downtown, the walkable streets, public spaces and the views of the peaks and mountains. Allowing a 75' building for this project begins to impact the scale, charm, views and sunlight streaming to the sidewalks. It also sets a precedent for the future if a developer can purchase property with height conditions and then immediately challenge the very limits that they knew were there at the time of purchase. Certainly the developers are clever enough to make a profitable project while conforming to the scale and charm of our city.
