AC — Item 3 APR 18 2016 From: Phyllis Davies [ Sent: Monday, April 18, 2016 7:55 AM To: Carpenter, Dan; E-mail Council Website; jmarks@slocity.com; Ashbaugh, John; Christianson, Carlyn; Rivoire, Dan Subject: The rumor of Dan Carpenter's Switch is very disappointing to me ... I was going to vote for Dan for our Supervisor. Yet, his rumored switch of his seeming strong support in something so basic to Democracy as Getting Money Out of Politics makes me have strong cause to change my vote to someone for whom money doesn't win out, over good common sense. I usually see him in the morning at the Post Office but haven't in the last two weeks, so I am notifying all of you ! Take a look at the short video https:llshar.es/1 jYSHy I was not aware that is how Congress has to spend their time. A requirement? No wonder they don't get anything done ! Please do anything possible to keep money out of Politics. I see it is an investment in functioning Democratic Process! The actual cost of electoral integrity for San Luis Obispo is manageable. The ordinance provides a $20 voucher card to every registered voter in the city for redemption with those candidates who agree to public financing. Fewer than half of registered voters typically vote for city council seats. For approximately $125,000 in vouchers, we would have thousands of citizens actively engaged in candidate recruitment, rather than the 50 or so major donors who currently control the system. That is far less than what the city now spends on renovating public toilets. A ballot initiative is redundant, costly, and a time consuming effort. Poll after poll shows that 85% of Americans believe that our privatized system of campaign finance is broken. I am asking each of you to Please do anything possible to keep money out of Politics, Light and appreciation, C 805.440.9346 infodavies@earthIink.net P.O. Box 945, San Luis Obispo, CA 93406
