HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-19-2016 Public Comment, WhitefordMayor Jan Howell Marx City Council City of San Luis Obispo 990 Palm Street San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 April 19, 2016 Dear Madam Mayor and fellow City Council Members: COUNCIL MEETING: CH t 1.TElV1 NO.: C''v:ok i --'-c- C_a m +. . iAPR 192016 Enclosed is a petition that has been signed by many employees of San Luis Obispo County who are deeply concerned about the safety of the intersections at Santa Rosa and Monterey and Santa Rosa and Higuera Streets, Many of the county employees cross these intersections to attend meetings or training at the Kimball building on Monterey Street or to travel by foot to and from work. Almost every person we have talked to who uses these intersections has a story about how he/she was almost hit by a vehicle. We would encourage you to address our concerns by implementing one or more of the recommendations listed in the petition or any other improvements that are viable to make these corners safer. In addition to the staff member that is mentioned in our petition, another person was recently hit at the same corner. We have reviewed the 2014 traffic safety report for the City of San Luis Obispo and note that the numbers of collisions for the corner of Monterey and Santa Rosa seem low and the corner of Higuera and Monterey does not rank high enough to be shown on the report. However, this report fails to report how many times people have had very close incidents of being hit by a vehicle, nor does it fully detail the extreme dangers of these roadways, 2014 Rank Prev. We feel that some of the ideas we presented in the petition may help curtain the number of close calls and accidents. We thank you in advance for addressing this issue and making changes that will improve the safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers. If you have any questions or would like to seek further input please do not hesitate to contact me at (805) 781-4027. Sincerely, Andrea Whiteford We, the employees of the County of San Luis Obispo, are petitioning the City of San Luis Obispo to address and resolve imperative safety issues at the corners of Santa Rosa and Monterey Streets and Santa Rosa and Higuera Streets. These corners are extremely dangerous for pedestrians. Recently, one of our co-workers sustained significant injuries when she was hit by a vehicle in the crosswalk while the walk sign was on. On a daily basis there are many other close calls between vehicles and pedestrians. We urge you to do a traffic safety study to determine how to increase the safety for both pedestrians and vehicles at these intersections. Below are suggestions that would potentially increase safety at these corners. Applying any one of the following recommendations, or some combination of them, may help very this hazardous situation: 1) Make a no right -turn on red light 2) Make left -turn on green arrow only 3) Designate a simultaneous 4 -way stop for all vehicles to allow pedestrians to walk 4) Place flashing lights across the cross -walk to alert drivers of pedestrians Q 1 7 12 0 G !
