We are concerned about the opening of Luneta Dr. to through traffic and we are writing to express our opposition to the current plans. Our home is several blocks from the closed end of Luneta, but opening the street would change the character of the neighborhood making it less friendly to walking and biking We walk our dogs most mornings or evenings along Luneta and the surrounding streets and we appreciate how quiet and inviting the area is. We are confident that these streets would be busier, louder, and less appealing to homeowners if the traffic was to increase. We believe that opening Luneta to traffic would fundamentally (and negatively) change the character of our whole neighborhood. Also, We have been told that the reason for opening Luneta Dr. is to reduce traffic on Ramona Dr. We don't think opening Luneta Dr. will decrease the number of cars traveling on Ramona Drive. Living on Ramona Dr., we have formed the opinion that much of Ramona Dr. traffic is people using that street as a shortcut to Broad street. Also Cal Poly students from other neighborhoods park on Ramona then take the bus to campus. Finally, many cars exiting the Foothill shopping center use Ramona rather than the the Foothill Dr. exit. Our point is that traffic on Ramona is complex and is unlikely to be improved by opening Luneta. If the city is serious about reducing traffic on Ramona multiple approaches focusing on traffic calming must be adopted (rather than a "band-aid" approach of opening Luneta.) We would very much like to be included in this discussion of reducing and calming vehicular traffic in our neighborhood. Our neighborhood is part of the Pacheco and Bishop Peak Elementary Schools' Safe Route to School route, the Broad Street Bike Boulevard, and is also in line for a Neighborhood Traffic Plan to address traffic on Ramona Dr. and La Entrada Ave. As you can see our neighborhood is active in trying to find solutions to traffic concerns while promoting alternative modes of transportation. We are asking for the City Council to place the opening of Luneta Dr. on the City Council's agenda. We feel that our neighbors and ourselves have not be given a fair chance to weight in on a decision that would adversely affect our quality of live in our neighborhood. Thank you for your consideration, Kit Gould and Ed Himelblau 330 Ramona Dr. SLO 93405
