Subject: In Support of Transition's Bishop Street Studios
Hello,
Meeting: ARC -CHC 09-19-2016

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
I am writing in support of Transition's Bishop Street Studios as both a local Emergency Physician and as CEO
of SLO MakerSpace, the Central Coast's only community shop, training, and prototyping facility.
As an Emergency Physician, I see the effects of mental illness on a daily basis. While the mental health
program at the SLO Department of Public Health provides imperative basic services that are more robust here
than many communities have, there are still gaping holes in the support system. Transitions Mental Health is
able to fill some of those holes, and the Bishop Street Studios is an excellent effort to provide much needed
housing to our community members with mental illness. This program will undoubtedly improve access to
services, decrease mental and physical health crises, and decrease healthcare costs in this population.
As a local business partner at SLO MakerSpace, we recognize the importance of stability and support for those
striving to succeed and integrate into the community. Secure housing and access to job training and work
programs is imperative for those working through mental illness issues. These are almost impossible to achieve
without help for many, and this community investment will benefit not only those utilizing the facility, but San
Luis Obispo as a whole.
Please support Transition's Bishop Street Studios and feel free to contact me for further comments or questions.
Thanks
