Dear Mayor Harmon and Council Members,
Thank you for your service to our City and community. I appreciate your time and energy towards this City
goal setting effort.
I have been living and working in San Luis Obispo for the past 25 years. May children have been
and currently are active members of AYSO and the San Luis Obispo Soccer Club. I have been involved in
youth sports locally as well as fulfilling my role as the Women's Soccer coach at Cal Poly. The need for
sport field space is at a critical point in our area and needs to be addressed.
I would like to ask for your support of the Parks and Recreation Commission goal to update the Parks and
Recreation Element which is over 15 years old. The Council has received community requests to update
the Parks and Recreation Element during the last four budget cycles - the policy guidance from this
element is desperately needed during this time of growth in our city.
The P&R element calls for 10 acres per 1,000 residents but we currently have only 3.3 acres of parks per
1000 residents (LUCE EIR). The new specific plans will only provide enough parks to maintain this ratio
and many of the city's existing parks and recreational needs have gone unmet for years now. With the
development of new homes, some of which are already in progress, our need for parks is now. Developers
of some of these new projects are already coming before the PRC and council requesting direction on
proposed parks and amenities. Without a complete understanding our recreational needs and an updated
policy document it will be difficult to plan appropriately. There needs to be funding provided by the
Council now to conduct a needs assessment and complete a guiding document for future parks
acquisition and development. I plan on supporting this goal from the PRC and hope you will support it as
well.
Thank you for your time!
Sincerely,
Alex Crozier
